*rechecks notes* 1/8 teaspoon, or 8 drops, of unscented chlorine bleach per gallon of water, double that if the water is cloudy or murky. You can get away with mixing and leaving it for 30 minutes if you don't mind it smelling and tasting like a swimming pool; extra time lets the chlorine come out of solution with the water to get rid of the smell and taste. (also important for those with heavily chlorinated tap water) Boiled is safer, but not always feasible in a disaster.

In regards to evacuation, the main disaster that would make evacuation important in my area is wildfire; I am living in Anchorage at present, and the city itself is a more than adequate firebreak. Anchorage is also the likely landing point of rescue efforts.

This is a really, really, really strange thread.

Oh-oh. Did I say that out loud?

Hehe, I think zombie roadies would have to switch to flat/platform pedals after a month or two. A sad day for any self-respecting roadie both alive or undead.

Why?

Well all that disengaging from the clipless pedals would rip their rotting legs off at the ankles!

Blimey, funny the crap you think about when commuting home! :o

Anyone else got any possible zombie-related issues when riding a bike?

Chemical and nuclear releases are also reasons to evacuate--and not as uncommon as people think. If you have a factory in your town, or a railroad line, these releases are possible.

Or a pipeline.

After Katrina, we know this might not help much.

BTW wasn't the worst earthquake in the history of the world at Anchorage in the 1960s?

I thought it said "Is your commuter ready for Amsterdam"

I like that question better so I'll answer it.

With a generator light and a better lock, I'm good.

The energy used in the Alaska earthquake was greater than the combined
world nuclear arsenal. The same arsenal could only sustain a cat 5
Katrina type for only one day. The atomic shots of bldgs being blown
down was staged by civilian defense. They used the data to incoporate
stronger bulding codes in the U.S.
To the dismay of some of my friends, I have the Trinity atom
bomb dvd collection. Pro or con the footage of nukes expoding
in space is pretty spectacular.
The film ends with Chinese army soldiers on horse back.
Soldiers and horses wearing gas masks and going cowboy.
(No, I don't have a bunker):)

In the event of a really bad natural disaster, or political disaster, I really don't think the shape of my bike is going to be the biggest concern. Fresh water, food, and shelter come first in that order. The ability to move over great distances... hundreds of miles... really comes in about tenth or so down the list.

Depends on where you are. If it's cold, lack of shelter will kill you much faster than lack of water.
