When Did You Start Commuting?

I saw this sort of thing on the ss/fg forum and thought I'd bring it up over here.
At what age did you start commuting seriously and on a regularly basis?
I personally started when I was 14 yrs. old about a year ago.

Hmm....I used to ride a lot to and from school (high school) then got driver's license and stop commuting. I just got back into it last year when gas was at the highest! Now I commute 20-40 miles a week to gym, grocery store, bank, post office and etc. It makes me feel good when I'm done riding for the day. I help myself stay in good health and help put one less vehicle on the road to pollute. Keep riding ya'll!!

Just kidding! About a year and a half ago after the diabetes diagnosis and deciding to "healthy" up my lifestyle.

Two years ago, commuting to and from a summer job. Now I ride to high school a lot, and will probably be car-free in a year going to college. I drive when needed, but prefer alternative transportation. Saves me money, and it's fun.

some of my friends think i'm crazy, others make me feel guity when they rode in and I didn't.

My wife and I both shared a Jeep. Last year it broke down after we went to the beach. We spent all our money on the trip and had little to no money to spare. With no promise of it getting fixed in the near future I pulled my old bike out of the shed and started riding it to work. We eventually got the Jeep fixed, but now it's my wife's vehicle. I bought a new bicycle and ride almost every day.

Around 1980 I started riding to school (community college) when I found it was quicker than the bus.

This time around? I rode my bike to work for the first time on Feb. 11, 2008. Then I was just hoping for once or twice a week, now I try to ride to work every day.

I started in early December, 2008. I bought my bike in late November and took a week to convince my wife it was safe to ride to work on.

I have an extremely reliable and fuel-efficient car. However, when I began paying more than $3/gallon for gas, I began to worry about how much higher it would go and what I would do if it got higher than the family budget could handle. I had ridden the local park-and-ride several times in the past, but even then I was using 10 miles worth of gas each time. It wasn't until around October that I actually began considering buying a bicycle. I had ridden one as a kid, but stopped in junior high. Now, I'm commuting in to work twice a week. I'm already trying to work my way up to three times a week. Oh yeah, I'm 32. Bike commuting helps me feel like I'm still in my early 20's though.

Started about May 20 2008. I have driven about 5 times since then and haven't driven to work since August. I hope to make it to August this year with out driving. One year with out driving will be pretty neat! Some of the 110-115 degree days are very challenging. I might have to have someone follow me...there where a couple days last year that I probably shouldn't have rode home and one day I had to stop and I suffered the rest of the evening. Not sure if it was heat stroke but probably pretty damn close if not.

Tuesday May 30th, 2006.

The TTC (Toronto Transit Commission) went on a "wildcat" strike nicely in time to begin the business day on the Monday - I got a ride in that morning. On the Tuesday morning, after service had been resumed and the strike ended, the was all kinds of chaos as I walked upto the local station - I think the subway was shutdown for a few stops in my area - so I walked back home and jumped on my bike. It felt like a big deal/endeavour, but I'm damn glad I took the step

I remember the first time I commuted it seemed like a big deal. I didn't know what would happen. To tell the truth, I was a little scared.

And it was less than 4 miles one way!

March 1982. Started on a Tuesday morning and my cycle got stolen out of my garage on Friday evening, right after I got home, went inside to get a drink of water before closing the garage. Bought a new, better cycle on Saturday and personal property insurance paid for it.

Early 2002, the last semester of my senior year in high school, I didn't have a car, and I got sick of the bus, so I started riding my bike 16 miles round trip to school and home.

Then I got my first motorcycle and went back and forth between riding it and my bike to work and all over town.

Now I live 2.5 miles from work, own 2 motorcycles and three bicycles, and put maybe 400 miles a year on the motorcycles. The bicycles are my primary means of transportation, and errand/utility haulers, and see an estimated 4,000 miles a year.

In college, 1985. My parents thought it might be a good idea for me to take a bike. I didn't quite understand, until I started classes and needed the bike. Since then, I've had cycles of bike commuting and then not bike commuting. Getting my first car near the end of college ended the bike commuting thing for a few years. (What a mistake for me to stop riding at that point!) There has been a lot more commuting in the past 10 years.
