I Dropped the F-Bomb
My commute home is 14 miles of mostly country roads. There have been some tough commutes what with the cold and snow. Many of the country roads still have a glaze on them. Anyway, I'm commuting home tonight after dark and a SUV comes up behind me as I near a stop sign. I stay out in the road because otherwise I figure this guy will whip by me and then stop right in front of me. After we clear the intersection he zooms by me and his passenger yells at me for not getting over. Well...I let fly.... "F*** off" in my loudest voice. He doesn't even hesitate in acknowledgment that he's heard me. I spent the next couple of miles imagining what I'd do if he actually stopped. I'm 5' 8" and 140 pounds. It was probably a stupid thing to do in my circumstance. But I'd do it again!

I know it's hard not to sometimes, but to tell you the truth, waving and smiling probably has a better effect on those a-holes than stooping to their level. If you can, try and blow a kiss to them also.

I'm not sure it has a better effect on them, but it sure helps me to feel better about myself when I respond appropriately.

You gotta be careful with that F word and the finger. One time I was making a left turn at a busy intersection. The cager behind me got a little close and honked his horn. Without thinking I yelled, "Gimme some eff-ing room!" and flashed the finger over my shoulder. After I finished the turn, I looked back. The cager was a friend from work, with his wife and little son. They were just saying Hi. God I felt bad!

I was just riding home, nighttime, very cold here in Montreal, some guys in a taxi roll down the window to yell "you must be nuts" shoulda said "and you must be dicks"

I do not think the guys in the taxi had any ill will towards you. If anything they respected your courage to be riding out in the cold while they were in their warm taxi.

...On the other hand, when I'm in the car where people can't clearly see me, a honk means something entirely different.

LOL. I sometimes restrain myself by thinking what if I meet that person later under other circumstances, like at work.

I almost got into a fight because I dared yell "HEY!" at a motorist who almost hit me at a corner. Amazing. People are freaking NUTS.

That generally only happens if the guy knows he's in the wrong. Some people who just almost caused an accident will respond to any challenge aggressively, because I guess they think it makes YOU the bad guy, deflecting the blame from them.

When is comes down to a response from the motorist your size or muscle mass will not really matter, if you encounter a real psycho they will just run you over. If they should decide to exit their murdermobile and fight you like an old spaghetti western, they are most likely out of shape and slower then you. Of course your image will determine what they do, when I'm riding while wearing mil-surp camo and rocking tattoos motorists will treat me differently than when I'm kicking it in lycra...

One thing about dropping the f-bomb is that they can't hear you. I have flipped off more than one of my friends, I guess they thought I was waving... I try to wave and smile, it freaks out the antagonistic and the oblivious are not offended.

Usually I just say "Dude!" to myself and roll my eyes when a cager does something stupid or careless with no harm done. So far the drivers have been nice and have stopped and apologized.

I'm a big fan of the C bomb. It gets the point across, one syllable, and a very naughty word. That's my "go to" word. Sometimes if they make a stupid move that doesn't REALLY piss me off, I'll shake my head in disappointment at them if I can get along side them.
My new year's resolution was to not yell at as many drivers anymore. I'm getting better at it. Maybe it's different in a city though, you have to deal with A LOT of people.
I remember road biking a few months ago and this blonde bimbo looking trophy wife in a BMW cut in front of me while I was doing 25-30 mph. I spit a nice one on her windshield... next thing I know she's driving along side me cussing me out after she flipped around. That's the moment I knew I should stop doing stuff to drivers... they're in a car and can have their way with me if they want.

I've been in many, and lost a few. Think you can judge a fighter by looks? You'd be wrong 50% of the time. I look like a maniac but would consider myself average. I know a fat guy that would wipe the walls with most people. I've seen 6'6" meat heads beaten down by 5'2" "shrimps".
Then factor in knives, firearms, crowbars, or just the whole Freakin' car running you over (the most likely).
Avoid the fight if you can. The law will be on your side if you are on the defensive (usually).
I, too, have used the f-bomb, piss-off, die in a car fire, C-word, and many more creative and inflammatory remarks. And each time I was wrong. Just remember, we are naked and defenseless on bicycles. Being a black belt 9th degree, packing spray, pistol, street sweeper shotgun and body armor, won't make a lick of difference when they run you over a day, week, month, or year later.
I'm not saying cower away and hide, I'm just saying understand the consequences of failure.

Motorist packing a pistol...
Well once I was riding here in Houston to work, and a motorist tried to pass me, but the person in front of me moved left and into the lane blocking the fella behing me. The guy behind me mashed his horn and said something to me. So of course I threw up my hand with the middle finger extended without looking first. When the car passed me, and three guys who looked like ex-cons with shaved heads slowly passed and glared at me I got worried. I slowed down immediatly and so did they. They tried to slow and wait for me, and then the guy in the back seat flashed a pistol at me. Needless to say, I got out of there fast at the next turn. I also took the really long way to work that day. My lesson? Dont shoot your mouth off or loose your temper without thinking....could have ended badly.
