my rules:
1) they didn't see you / don't care
2) lights, lights, lights
3) take the lane if it is dangerous for cars to overtake (i.e. blind corner - they won't think twice about smashing you into parked cars to avoid a head-on)
4) look ahead - see what is coming up
5) if you do something stupid, learn from it and don't do it again. It'll probably only save you a few minutes anyway.
