Age of Marathon Ends
Okay, maybe it was just a calendar quarter and not an "age."
My primary commuter the last three months or so has been the 1983 Raleigh Marathon I pulled out of a dumpster. I have two other bikes to commute on, but they're both out of commission right now. Within a week, though, they should both be up and running.
I found out that my usual commuter, a 1994 Nishiki, has cranks that were recalled by Shimano in 1997. My LBS was not a Shimano service center but said they'd become one if I wanted them to. I said sure, but it ended up taking about three months for Shimano to do the paperwork. They finally got their dealer number last week, the parts have been ordered, and they will be putting them on next week.
My other choice is a 1966 Raleigh DL-1 which I don't ride much when it's too cold, and when it started to warm up, I found out one of the tires has a nice bulge in the sidewall. I ordered new 28" tires from Flying Pigeon LA and they are on their way.
So by next week I'll have two more choices for commuting. It will be interesting to see what the natural "split" in saddle time between the three bikes turns out to be. It'll also be interesting to see what happens to the mix when I finally get my old Schwinn put together as a fixie.
