If the OP can get excited about our misuse of the word commuting, then I'm surprised he can survive all the misuse of apostrophes. I saw a post on BF with about 4 sentences and 10 misplaced apostrophes. I almost got over my aversion to correcting grammar.

What really bothers me is when people talk about a "language peeve" when what they're criticizing isn't improper language, but improper diction.

FredOak 03-20-09 06:41 AM

If I wanted my grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. critiqued and corrected I would have signed up for the English forum.

And the spoken language is *******ized just as much, should we correct folks during conversation too.

This is a common mannerism, even in speech lately.

Another one which started a few years ago is beginning a sentence with "I mean...". It used to mean, "in other words" but it no longer precedes a rewording of anything.

Good. This conversation could benefit from a little more ellipticism.

Teacher man now steps down from his soapbox now. Thank you.

Since this is the "Commuting" area of "Bike Forums," the meaning of the above is abundantly clear given the context.

Strange. Bob the Angry Flower didn't mention the confusion between the possessive "its" and the contraction "it's."

"The cat stuck its feet out of the bag."

"The cat is out of the bag and it's very happy about it."

"Teacher man now steps down from his soapbox now. Thank you. "

I hate when people don't proof read.

Be very careful when throwing stones in a glass house.

"Proofread" is one word.

It's always really easy to acquire targets in a grammar/diction/whatthefrakever thread.

dynaryder 03-20-09 11:36 AM

Fixie. There,I said it.

Whoops,wrong forum.

noteon 03-20-09 11:37 AM

Personally, I hate it when people don't Proofide.

A comma splice is where you put two independent clauses (full sentences) together with a comma.

I.E. "The cat's feet hung out of the bag, it was a big cat."

as opposed to the correct;

The cat's feet hung out of the bag; it was a big cat.

or

The cat's feet hung out of the bag. It was a big cat.

or

The cat's feet hung out of the bag, because it was a big cat.

etc.

Haha, that's pretty funny, but my wife would never hang with a dweeb who cycles to work and posts on a bicycle forum...

Wait a minute. On second thought, where did you say you live? :notamused:

RogerB 03-20-09 01:16 PM

Lol! ^^^

crhilton 03-20-09 09:56 PM

This is the greatest thread bikeforums has ever had. The OP should receive an award.

I hate myself for this. I have a brooks on my commuter, and I have some proofide for it that I can't find. I'm too cheap to buy another tin since I know the first tin will show up as a result. I'd rather buy another saddle.

I figure online forums are an informal venue where we can all let a few lazy sentences go without comment. I used to get all worked up when I saw they're in place of their. They're (sic) was a sign at work that had that mistake, and it used to annoy me to no end.

rumrunn6 03-21-09 06:47 AM

a colleague at work dislikes my usage of bullets but I find them so helpful because I dislike writing complete sentences and because I have a personal quest for speed and clarity
