New bar tape

I'm on a budget right now (read poor) so I bought some $3 hockey tape to put on this bike I pulled out of the dumps. The wheels where not from the dumps!

typically to wrap electrical wires.

its old school

i use it for:

my brake levers (obviously to provide more friction, aka: grip)

water bottle cages: makes water bottles seriously stay put

chain stay, as a chain protector

some times i use it as bar tape, or to finish a bar wrap

on cable housing, to act as a frame protector to reduce rub agains the frame. i.e. headtube area.

i also use it to wrap mini pumps, so that they have a more snug fit in their frame mounting bracket.

and

VELCO CABLE TIES

great for holding pumps in place in their frame mounts

Hockey tape is great. Cloth feel, enough in a roll to switch it out often if necessary, cheap, etc etc. I'm a fan!

Is friction tape the same as gaffer tape? It looks very similar.

yes

all that kind of stuff is pretty much the same.

from what I've experience, Friction Tape in the narrow width, is most easily used for bike stuff, and its the cheapest.

I'm always blown away when i see basically the same product sold as something else, like tennis racket tape.

albeit, its a little different, so really its not "the same product", but for all intended purposes... the same.

plus with regular old cheap Friction tape, you get a decent sized roll.

i wrap it on all sorts of stuff. you end up on a friction tape frenzy

Hmm..

Friction tape looks interesting. I used regular electrical tape as a chainstay protector for my last fixed gear and it came out quite nice. Friction tape appears to look nicer.
I had a neighbor ask me where I picked up that chainstay protector. I threw him my roll of electrical tape. lol
