Hybrid decision...?

Hello everyone,

I recently have been trying to decide on a suitable hybrid bike for myself around £450.
I needed something primarily for fitness but which would be used easily in the city (Glasgow) but also used for 40 mile bike runs. No really rough ground but some uneven slabs, occasional cobbles, pothole etc.

I have almost settled on the Trek 7.5 FX 2008 which seems reliable, versatile, good components, fairly comfy, fast, ok factory default tyres, and not too harsh a ride.

Does this seem like a good decision? Let me know what you think and let me know if there are other better bikes that would be suitable for me.

Cheers all,

Dan

The spoke count doesn't inspire toughness for city bombing rides. But, I could be wrong. Did you look at the 7.3 version?

Not sure a hybrid is the right choice for 40 mile trips.

Hybrid is a horrible idea for a 40mile ride imo. I can do around 20 on my hybrid tops and then it gets to be too uncomfortable with the small range of positions.

I did my first century on a hybrid, but then I switched to a bike better suited to distance.

That said, sure: I'd do 40 miles on one. It just wouldn't be my first choice. I'd rather have something a little less upright, whether a road bike or a mountain bike with fat road tires.

All that aside, I think it's sometimes more important to get a bike you really like than to get Just The Right Bike. If the 7.5 is beaming its siren song into your midbrain, go for it.

I rode across the US on a hybrid. It was fine and I was comfortable. I swapped out the flat bars for trekking bars so I had lots of hand positions but still a good comfy upright one for city riding. Also, bar ends go a long way in making the flat bar more comfy. If you like it go for it, dont over think it.

+1 on all of that. If you love not quite the right bike, you'll ride it. If you don't love just the right bike, you won't.
