See ya front wheel!
My front wheel just got stolen off my bike on my front porch. The bike was locked up. The front wheel was not. Oh well just gives me more reason to buy that Giant Defy 3 I have been wanting! Just thought I would throw this sad news up here!

My condolences, Ken...
I once had two bikes stolen out of locked storage in my apartment house's basement. We were moving out shortly, and I had pulled the bikes out briefly while organizing things... Locked everything up afterwards. Next morning I found the latch pried away from the door and my bikes and floor jack were missing.
Fortunately I had renter's insurance with Allstate.
So yes, even your own porch (or basement) isn't always safe. I know you'll be keeping the Defy indoors...
Hope things start looking up.

Is that a left hand drive bike or is the picture reversed?
O, is there a rest of the story with that?

I just saw a bike pedal carefully locked with a strong looking u lock.....I can only surmise the bike got stolen by unscrewing the pedal.

Drops small screws
And the light/shadow, gamma, and grain on the bike and rider not matching the background.

I'm sorry for your loss- when you buy your Giant Defy 3, don't forget to buy a pair of locking skewers!

Hm. We've had car and homeowner's insurance with them for 20 years, have totalled a couple of cars and had a few other claims (ice damage, a few others). We've never paid a dime out of pocket for anything. I think it depends on your agent, and whether he's there to work for you or is just trying to make money off of you.

"what are locking skewers?"

Lots of variations of this, and they generally weigh less than quick releases.

I noticed a bike outside the train station today locked securely to a pole but without its rear tire; I'm guessing that commuter was pretty pissed when he got back. Locking Lesson 101: lock all removable parts if you're leaving your bike at the train station in a major city.

one morning on my way to school in the very early '70s in 7th grade I popped a wheely on my stingray and the front wheel dropped and rolled, I was able to come down and land on my feet because I wasn't going too fast, I may have fallen as well, but no bad injury - I vividly remember watching my wheels go down Kimball Ave another 1/2 mile before launching into someone's yard. I was able to put it back on ride the rest of the way, and then home with no problem but I think my LBS had to straighten the fork a little. Fond memories.

Did you always leave the bike locked on your front porch? If so, the thief probably scouted the area and became familiar with your routine.
