1st Day Back
I am back at work...but I'm a long way from riding my bike again. In fact, I am still 4 weeks away from being able to put 100% of my weight on the injured leg. I am at least 8 to 10 weeks away from being cleared to ride my bike again.
It's been exactly 2 weeks since I had the surgery which fixed me up from the wipe out: I fell off the bike while rolling over some railroad tracks which crossed the road at a funny angle. The surgeon reconnected the head of my femur to the rest of the bone by driving 4 pins into my thigh bone, and now I must do the rest. Getting up and moving again has not been easy.
Right now, I am planning to get my commute back on by August -- if all goes well. I plan to ease into it by riding in on Fridays. But, I am still a long way away from that dream being a reality. For now, I will be happy to just start walking again.

Yeah- Welcome back. I feel your pain. I bought my first road bike back in the summer of '07 and thought I would go for a spin around the block so rather than going out the back of the house I thought I would just go down the front sidewalk down to the corner to get on the street. I approached to corner where the sidewalk had a small lip at the curb and thought I would easily roll over it. Wrong- I flipped right over it and broke the radial head off my left arm as I tried to brace the fall. I had surgury within days of the fall and rehab to keep my arm/joints/muscles moving almost immediatly. 6 months later I was feeling brave enough to ride again. Two years out now, I still have some elbow/joint pains but I can extend and flex my arm just like normal.
I'm so happy to be riding again. Make sure you take the rehab seriously. Don't let you leg/knee stiffen up on you.

Getting up and then keeping myself moving has been my primary focus since the surgery. Going into work today, doing it on crutches, took a lot of effort. But, getting there was one very high hurdle. Now, I need to build on that success.
I had a two-hour-ish, 27-mile, bike commute before the wreck. Now, because of the extra effort required to get showered, shaved and dressed, plus all the distance I now need to cover while hobbling on my crutches, it takes me at least two-hours just to get there by car. And it is no less of an effort.
