Commute home was better than the commute to work; temperature was a few degrees higher, and the city crews had plowed most of the MUTs that I ride. Still pretty slow going.

Just kidding. I'm sure it's a lovely place. Having spent a few winters in Russia and Ukraine, I can vouch for the fact that you get used to the cold and adapt to the climate and all that goes along with it, like salt! :) My commute in this morning was unique for me. It was the frist time I can remember that I commuted in so early that I needed to use my headlight/flashlight and not just my little blinkie. Left before the butt crack of dawn to come to work early to finish up work on a big publication project w/ a deadline today (just finished it), that after working on it late into the night at home. I'm tired today. I'll appreciate the predicted tail(ish)wind heading home this afternoon. Since I got in so early and finished already, I may be able to leave before the sun goes down! |
2010 winter bike to work day here, and 37F at 7:30 this morning. Stopped at a breakfast station and the mechanic that volunteered turned out to be the owner of a new LBS that just opened a few blocks away. Had free coffee, talked a bit and went on. A great day to commute in Fort Collins. It will be even better if does not snow this afternoon.

This is why I went singlespeed :D
Rode into work (Richmond to downtown Vancouver) yesterday and office workers thought I was nuts. Rode in to join the VACC ride for the Hornby Bike Lane celebration. |
A mix of rain and drizzle this morning. Slightly late and hungover. Nice ride though.
Decided not to take vacation between xmas and new year, as those days might push me over 4,000 miles for the year... plus it's always pretty slack at that time anyway. |
21F and partly cloudy with winds from the WNW @ 18mph and 8F windchill. Had to call it quits about 1/3 into my commute. I bent a part in the drivetrain accelerating from a stop light. It still kinda worked, but was extremely noisy and caused a lot of drag. I didn't want to take any chances and risk doing any further damage to the idler or chain, so I called my buddy who lived nearby. He picked me up and brought me and my broke down trike home. I plan to have it fixed tomorrow so I can commute Friday for finals.

Our weather is defying physics today... it is sucking and blowing at the same time.
|
I have also been riding in the winter with goggles, I have two kinds but the one that works the best is for mountain biking and is vented so it doesn't fog, the other one does every time I stop at a light.

Mild temps continue for the commutes in Central Texas. Cool mornings and upper 60's in the afternoon - except for today it was 77 on the way home. Had to extend my afternoon commute...which ended up being 35 miles for me. Tomorrow should be about the same - maybe a bit cooler but still in the 70's for the ride home. Friday should be cooler - and back to the normal temp for this time of the year.
The warm temps have been brought in by some strong, gusty southerly wind. This means that I've had plenty of chances to fight a headwind each day this week. All good training - but I'm learning how the wind can make you a little more tired than normal. |

Honestly, once the blood gets flowing it's not bad. Ideally, I need some full-fingered gloves that breathe a little. I think that'd be ideal for these situations. As it is, impermeable leather full fingers (read VERY sweaty) vs. half-fingered cycling gloves (a little cold at first), I've been going for the half-fingers when the temps were closer to freezing (25+F). Today was the first day I knew that would be cold on my finger so much it hurt, thus the full fingers, at least for a while.

Not much commuting lately; we've had too much snow. We've had more than 120 cm (~47 in) in the past 10 days. That already beats last year's snowfall of 108 cm (42.5 in)... for the entire winter! We were completely snowed in on Wednesday of last week so I didn't even make it to work that day, and was only able to ride in on Friday.
This week the weather looked more promising; we had a warming trend for a day which gave the city time to clear the roads so I was all set to go on Monday morning. Unfortunately the padlock that I use to lock the garage door was frozen solid. It would have taken me too long to thaw it out so I was forced to take a cab. Yesterday morning I forgot to set the alarm so I had to cab it again. I was off today and am off again tomorrow, so here's to hoping for good commuting weather on Friday! In the meantime here's a pic of my street from a couple of nights ago. BTW we've added another foot or so of snow since then... http://i.imgur.com/L4d08l.jpg |
Not bad today at 13 F ( -10 C ). There was no wind and no breeze, just cold, and it makes all the difference in the world. It is supposed to snow today, but in the afternoon, so no problem there.
|
19f Nothing seemed to want to work this morning, after a week of rain and 40f+ weather this rapid freeze wasnt kind to the bike. My freewheel wouldn't engage my chain was frozen and rear derailleur was stuck, i was able to get it all working pretty quick, just an annoying way to start the morning
|
30F and icy. No problem with the studs, though. If fact, coming down a gradual hill leading out of my subdivision I caught up to and had to slow for a pickup truck who was driving cautiously.
I wish I had a horn to honk at him. And I could have yelled, "Get off the effin road!". |

This winter I'm using MTB full-finger (non-insulated) gloves under a pair of fleece flip-over mittens. The combo allows for some temperature modulation and seems to be doing the trick so far.
Temps in the low 20s F as I rode in this morning. Saw three or four fellow commuters. Not bad given they're calling for snow today and I came in late (left home around 9:15). And the snow is coming down. I started just as I approached my office, hasn't let up since, and there's actually some accumulation on the streets (which I had heard were being pre-treated). This puts the afternoon commute in jeopardy. Might have to leave my bike parked downstairs and metro home. Booooooooooooooooooo-hissssssssssss! |
44F and Rain... First time I had real rain in that temp. It wasn't as pleasant as I envisioned unfortunately. My tights kept me fine for lower half. Upper half had major drenching... (not from rain but from sweat) when I wore long sleeve jersey and rain jacket on top. After 14 miles sitting in train became damp and chill and not a pleasant experience. Also found out while the wool sock kept me warm, my shoe got pretty wet. Sock dried up in 30 minutes once in office but I am not sure how long shoe will take to dry up. (Have small heater here and been blasting it at the shoes)
I really need to look at some good weather proof jacket that can vent. Most of rain will come in around 35-50f in here. (if it is warmer, I could care less if I get wet from rain typically) Other than that, I am happy I finally am on my 4th consecutive round trip of my commute. (30 miles each day...) Steps up from 3 mile round trip I started 6 months ago. |
great this morning. forgot my belt about 1 mile in, so i turned back..
the sun had come up by the time i started again, and the rain stopped. lovely morning! http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5087/...e332e996_b.jpg |
35F, clammy, sunny
|
34F and thick fog. Which produces that wonderful effect of frozen mist crystals on your sleeves.
|
Light rain as I left which petered out during the ride. Left late and lairy but a decent ride.
|
Well the ride in this morning was easy enough, no wind, cold but bearable. This ride home is going to be very interesting.
|
Ride in was cold but nice; ride home was interesting, as dcb23 put it--the first dusting of snow. Today I was very glad to have a folding bike! Rode a couple blocks to the subway, folded it up, hopped on, and rode the few blocks from my stop to my house. It was definitely slick out with enough snow on the ground to cause an accident.
|
Today I got all geared up only to find it was raining. Felt bummed about not riding and wussing out. I can ride in the cold but the rain and wet conditions bring a lot more variables into my commute. Just a beginner commuter here and I know that I have to HTFU one of these days LOL.

Single digit temps, clear and beautiful. Windstorm from the last two days has mostly scoured the MUP down to fast hardpack, with the occasional drift.
Except for the quarter mile or so between Fish Creek and the RR tunnel, which is just one giant snowdrift: http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/y...ey/drifts1.jpg http://i787.photobucket.com/albums/y...ey/drifts2.jpg There was just enough clear path between the drift and the fence to fit a bike through, and I only had to walk about 20 feet. |
Gusty wind out of the north starting this morning - but temps were still very mild. I reaped the benefits of a tailwind on the way home - which was really nice for a change!
|
We got nice cold weather in Bangkok today, this happen few times a year.Make us feel happy. :)
|
Just cold at 13 F ( -10 C). The secondary roads are in much better shape today, still icy, but very manageable. Yesterday, being the first snow fall, the roads were a mess. Earlier traffic created tracks that froze under more snow, so riding was difficult. I came to one intersection and
going left uphill, I just couldn't get any traction, so I went straight and came out the way going right. After watching traffic on one of the hills, I just got up on the sidewalk and finished that stretch. At the last intersection, I just got into the right lane and stayed there, traffic got in the left and no one complained. Most drivers seemed cautious, so that was good. I am on my MTB today and it did a good job. All in all it was only 2 in ( 5 cm) by the time it was finished, but being the first one, it is always messy. |
Cold at 19F and very slick. I decided to take public transit at first, then walked a block from my house and realized I could bike at least part of the way. Took it slow and rode a mile from my house to the subway stop, then a mile from the subway to my office. I got to work on time, when otherwise I would have had to transfer twice (subway, subway, bus) and would have been late for sure. A good day for a folding bike :)
|
Got a couple of inches of light fluff last night. The MUP (now pedestrian-ruined packed snow under fluff) is unrideable with the W106's so I took roads.
I'm praying to the bike gods that my recently-ordered Ice Spikers arrive at the LBS (1 block away) today so they can mount them for my ride home. I wish pedestrians would walk in their own $(@* track. That's my annual rant. Temps were around 15F/9C. No wind. |
-13C/9F. Thought I was coming down with a cold, so I wore my down jacket for the first time this year, but it was too warm. On the plus side it gives me confidence for the even colder days ahead in January.
|
Excellent commute in at 16F and dawn to sunny with no winds. Sadly this will be my last commute to school till the end of January. Already took one final this morning and I have one at 2pm, then I'm done with the semester. My first final was at 8:30am, so I left my house about 6:45am, and what a difference. There was a lot less traffic on the roads then when I usually leave at 7:15 for my usual 9:05 class.
