Cool site, thanks for sharing. The US (and I'm guessing Canada too) is the anti-thesis of what is shown on that site. Clearly cycling there is a way of life; there is minimal conflict between car and cyclist because seemingly everyone rides. That is Utopia as far as I'm concerned.

Well...I think it has a lot to do with the fact that everything is condensed. They don't need to travel 10 miles just to get to a supermarket, school, hardware store, etc.

According to the Sierra Club, almost half of all car trips in the US are <3 miles, while more than a quarter of them are less than a mile.

Good find... Thanks.

When it comes to bicycle use, there are so many lessons to be learned from Amsterdam that they're too numerous to count.

I wouldn't want to live anywhere else, but I sure do envy Amsterdam when it comes to bike culture.

That may be true, but that's a personal choice that most of us make ie choosing to live in places where the only way to get around is by car. But I know Mississauga reasonably well - used to live in Toronto and still have family living there - and I'm guessing most people there as in the rest of both our countries would still choose to drive for much smaller distances as pointed out by uke

Thanks for the link!
I was in Amsterdam for a few days a couple of months back. I saw literally thousands of bikes, and I never saw a single racing-style bike. In fact, I didn't see a single bike with drop bars. It is a different bike-culture there for sure. I wish I had taken a picture outside the central train station. There were hundreds of bikes locked up outside. People there use bikes for utility and transportation, not as a piece of sporting equipment.

The bike parking garage at the Centraal Station in 2000 or 2001.

Thanks for the pic of Centraal Station. That is exactly what I was talking about. It looked very similar in 2009 as it did back then.
