Why wasn't I told about this?

I shaved over 10 minutes off my commute time with clipless pedals. I bought the Forte campus pedals and bought the Shimano MT52 shoes yesterday and went clipless today; MAN WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!

Too bad the slacker at the bike shop didn't explain the benefits to me when I purchased my new bike.

My usual commute is just under one hour, today it was 48 minutes!!

Humm, mine did not make me that much faster. Have you fallen over at a stoplight yet? It will be when there are 100's of people watching.

I was really hesitant to make the investment in clipless, but did so probably two months ago and now all the bikes are SPD'd. It really does make a huge difference, and I try to inform everyone who gets a relatively performance-oriented bike at our shop of the virtues of trying clipless. I have yet to find someone who hasn't liked it.

You do realize with that last statement the anti clipless crowd is going to make an appearance?
lol

However, I do agree.

Clipless isn't for everyone, but for a long distance commute w/ few stops, or some climbing, it's useful and efficient.

Yep, here they come: clipless has literally no benefit for any cyclist and it's just a fad and only for people trying to look like Lance.

Anyway, welcome to the secret club.

I would like to argue about something different.
How about the aero benefits of a giro atmos vs a bell metro?

The Giro Atmos is only for freds with too much money. The Metro is more comfortable for every rider and should be included with the purchase of every bike. If you'll examine this carefully-researched paper, you'll see that the Metro is also more aero, giving the average rider at least 10 minutes in a TT.

Of course, that's if you're foolish enough to wear a helmet at all. Uh oh...

I ONLY fall over when 100's of people are watching. It's some kind of rule, I think.

I've never had any trouble clipping out, makes me wonder if I just never set them tight enough.

This.

Also, I didn't really notice a huge improvement when I switched from toeclips to clipless. That came from the riding every day bit.

Clipless makes a diff, but not nearly that much unless you don't know how to pedal with normal pedals.
You were either over excited about your new purchase, had a tail wind, made it through more lights than usual, ate a more nutritious breakfast, you are doping, or all of the above.

anyone using the eggbeaters with the platforms on them? Was in the market for some and these seem like a nice trade off for when you just want to ride down the street for something

There are three basic versions of those:Mallet, Candy and Smarty.

Mallets are basically a full platform pedal with eggbeaters in the middle.

Candies are a smaller platform version, and one of the most recommended.

Smarties are the least expensive.

They all use the eggbeater technology, and from what I hear they're all decent pedals.

I use Candies on my commuter as well as for cyclocross/mountain biking, and I'm in love with them. They're secure, but I have been noticing them feeling looser as time goes on and I wear down the cleat on my shoes. Still a good buy.

It could be the excitement of new equipment to knock that much time off a short ride. I'm thinking you may have been hammering on this ride.

But I do agree that clipless make pedaling easier.
