Whats your average speed?

I don't have a computer on my bike... yet. But I would say my avg speed is right around 11mph. It takes me 35ish minutes to do my 6.6 mile commute. It comes out to just over 11 mph. But the 35 minutes includes stopping at at least 2 or 3 lights. That is better than I thought.

I know I am not breaking any land speed records, but how does everybody else compare?

Keep in mind I am 255 and have only done about 8 commutes total in my life.

about 13-14 including stops. Should be higher without, as everytime I look at my computer while cruising it is around 15-18. I hate stopping :(

Around 11-12 mph, depends on the traffic. On a good day it's around 14 mph.

My suggestion: Don't concern yourself with the speed of other commuting cyclists, unless you are in a race or want to compete with a bunch of strangers or know-it-all experts who have different requirements and circumstances than yourself.

+1 -- This matches my experience on both counts. On days when I hit most of the lights, my average has been over 15, but usually it's around 13 or 14 mph.

It's not that important. I find instantaneous speed far more interesting to watch.

Warp factor 5.5 (read slow as molasses).

This is about my trip as well. There are only 4 or 5 stops, but if you don't catch them right each is easily 60 seconds or more. On a 5 mile trip that adds up quick.

It varies between 15-16 MPH. Last Friday was 15 on the nose.

I have two bikes that have computers... the accumulated average on my "fast bike" (light road bike, narrow tires) is just over 15MPH.

My commuter (heavier bike, racks, lights, fatter tires) has an accumulated average of about 13.5 MPH.

9-12 miles, depending on the route I take
17-20mph with auto-start/stop
14-16mph real time.

Average 16.5 but I have 10 miles of open road then 5 miles of stop lights and 5 miles of open road again. I live near the bay so no big hills just constant wind.

My moving average that my computer tracks is pretty consistent near 15mph in the fall and spring. Little slower winter and in the summer heat.

Did a Metric last weekend on some pretty good rollers in the rain and moving average was 15.1 for the 62 miles. That's on a Touring bike with either panniers or a trunk bag. Moving time was something like 4 hours 15 minutes my total time out was about 5 hours 30 minutes

Even the OP's initial question had a fatal flaw. It sounded like the OP is looking at the total time it takes to get to work (including stops), whereas many of the responders are talking about the avg speed recorded on their computers (which does not include stops). As such, you're really comparing apples to oranges. Also as ILTB said, everyone's circumstances are different. The speed on a road bike is going to be different than the speed on a mountain bike. Results are also going to vary depending on the nature of the commute. Is it a flat route or is it primarily hilly. If its hilly, is it mostly downhill or uphill? Is the commute on a MUP or is it on busy urban streets. All of those factors are important and therefore make a simple statement that "my average speed is xx MPH," virtually useless.

Commuting on the singlespeed - 17mph
Commuting on the brevet bike - 15mph
Distance on the fixed gear or brevet bike 14mph.

Speed Racer I ain't.

My average speed runs around 10 MPH as a rule, like I tell folks she's not fast but she's fun.

I recently bought a cyclocross bike and switched from my road bike for commuting. My new bike doesn't have a computer on it yet and I am enjoying the ride more. I don't spend my time looking at my speed and wondering what my average is going to be on the commuter bike. Now the other side is that I don't like to get up early so in the morning I need to make my 15 mile commute in 1 hour or real close to it. So, I ride pretty hard in the morning so I won't be late and then I enjoy the ride home. In my opinion it is okay to try to gauge your fitness progress by watching your average speed increase but it is easy to worry to much about it. YMMV of course.

I don't keep very close track, but it's highly dependent on the wind. My commute is 11 miles and it varies from 33 to 46 minutes, and that's 100% due to the wind. So from 14.5 to 20 MPH. I believe the "average average" is around 17 MPH. I have a lot of hills in half of my ride, and they're gravel roads too, so rain can affect it quite a bit too; if it's been raining a lot the gravel feels like going through molasses.

My speed averages anywhere between 20 km/h to 35 km/h on my singlespeed bike , I run a pretty low gear ratio 36/16 . It all depends on how the wind is blowing , and wheather the road is flat, uphill, or downhill. I never tested my speed on my other geared bike. But judging by the time it takes for me to get to work there seems to be very little difference.

without wind (head or back) my computer says my trip is around 13mph, but I have a dozen stoplights. I know this slows my total speed down a lot because 13mph is my speed when i'm going up some of the hills on my commute. I would guess that my actual average speed is 15-16mph.

Lately though, my girlfriend has been biking with me every morning. This is very nice, and I love spending the time with her, but it has cut down the average speed to 8-9 mph. She is very slow. So slow, in fact, that the gearing on my bike is not low enough to go uphills at her pace, I start getting knee pain unless I pick up the cadence.

On my commute, which is on a mup that winds through town and crosses a bunch of streets, I don't look at speed or average speed, but try to remind myself not to ride too fast and to always be ready to stop if necessary.

Its way too easy to take chances crossing busy roads without enough time to really assess the traffic, just for the sake of maintaining a "good speed", and to blast down the trail making everyone else using it uncomfortable.

On my road bike I get out of town by the best route and try to keep up 17-20 mph averages, depending on distance, on the quiet country roads where there's very little traffic.

Average speed is soooo unimportant.

If I'm towing my burley with full camping accouterments, 10mph is smokin'.
If I'm on the road bike at a wind-less/traffic-less 6AM, 17mph is dogging it.
