Bloody Rabbits!

 Braked hard yesterday to avoid a rabbit that dashed in front of me, nothing unusual there, it happens a couple of times a week, but doing it I felt a bit of a twinge in my hand. Later I noticed when writing at work that my hand was getting sore and after doing some physical work the top of my hand really started to throb.

By the time I was commuting back I was cursing and during the evening at home could not lift a cup. Off work today, can't even grip a pen and am struggling to open the dead bolt lock on the front door. Was going to pick up my MTB from the LBS tomorrow and go for a ride, but it's more likely to be the doctors.

Any medics out there? Pain is from the first finger and runs up the arm to a hot spot in front of the shoulder. Limited range of movement. Tendon I guess?

P.S that took about 20 mins to touch type lol

Next time, make hossenpfeffer! (sp?)

Don't brake. It's just a rabbit. They will make more.

Learn from this. It's like when drivers swerve to avoid deer and end up driving into trees.

That sucks! Hope its nothing serious.

Time to go see Dr. Summeroff!

Bummer about the finger, hope you heal quickly. Down here it's reptiles that trip me up, I almost nailed a 4-foot iguana that made a last minute dash the other day.

nice - so it sounds like most everyone would have taken it out?! crazy..

i don't know but it seems like a rabbit could cause a pretty nice wreck in addition to a guilty conscience. i think you did the right thing (like it matters what i think ;) )

maybe you pinched a nerve? i did that once in my ring finger shifting my right barcon, i just didn't grab it correctly or something, luckily it went away completely after an hour or so. good luck! i hope it doesn't take long to mend.

And if you're laid up try make a chukrut, or hossenpfeffer, both are good choices... (and definitely swerve if the pig runs in front of you)

Ouch, that sucks. Hope your hand gets better.

We don't get too many rabbits in the road, but we get a ton of squirrels. Seems like every day I come close to hitting one of those buggers.

The concern isn't for the rabbit. It's that running over a rabbit-sized object on a road bike might be hazardous to your health. That goes double if he ends up in the spokes. That'll ruin your day.

Sounds like nerve damage. I'm no doctor, but I've done some nerve damage to my arm before. From what I know, there are 2 major nerves running down your arm. One connects to your thumb, forefinger and middle finger. The other one connects to the last 2 fingers. I believe the one that connects to the thumb, fore and middle fingers also runs along the palm of your hand, so you could have nailed that one braking hard.

Do you have any tingling in any of those groups of fingers? I did damage to the one that controls the first group and it made my entire arm weak - I couldn't even do a pushup against the wall, so it could be the same thing.

Good luck and I recommend seeing a doctor/physiotherapist to help speed the healing.

You might try a little research into 'triggerpoint massage therapy'. I lucked out and fixed a shoulder problem that the Ortho was useless to solve because of a triggerpoint in my supraspinatus muscle.

I ran over a rabbit with my hybrid - I don't think it was a full size rabbit, but I didn't stop to look to see if it was "dead" or not...I guess it was okay, but might have died later. Either way, if on a road bike, then taking out a rabbit would be dangerous, but about 50% chance of wiping out I would guess..maybe less.

Hand still a little painful but appears to be resolving itself. There was no way of avoiding the rabbit it charged right out of the dark, straight in front of me, I braked on instinct. Funny at night the rabbits glow sort of whitish like the "killer Rabbit" :twitchy:

At least is wasn't the Chicken of Bristol!
