Shame. Even with universal healthcare, a pair of lights and helmets would have been cheaper than the hospital stay.

And the local radio is saying a broken set of headphones were found at the accident site.

Having had a near miss very close to here about a week ago, with a completely blacked out Ninja, I mean, he barely showed a glimmer of reflection, I'm finding it hard to raise any sympathy.

Big fibreglass ones.

When I was a kid I used to scoff when adults would say that wearing black when riding/playing/whatever'ing made you almost invisible at night. Like any kid I ignored the adults, and continued to wear black at night. Then I got a driver's license...turns out adults know what they're talking about. At least sometimes.

These are obviously ninjas, though not very good ones. A good ninja would be able to sense the presence of a fellow ninja around the corner to avoid collision. Even at night.

Are some of you actually suggesting the ninjas should have had lights? That would go against ninja code.

I wanna know what they were doing in the zoo at 4:30 am...

They couldn't have been real bike ninjas. Real ninjas would have vaporized in a puff of smoke, or perhaps a cataclysmic nuclear reaction.

Having almost met a couple of bike ninjas accidentally. I am very hard pressed to feel any sympathy for them.

I'm amazed at the ability of otherwise completely rational people to lose all sense when they operate a moving vehicle. No helmet, leave off the seatbelt (as the case may be). You can be sure that both those cyclists think the other one is at fault and that they did nothing wrong. These two people were not 'commuters' like us, they were homeless dudes probably up early bottle picking. This was confirmed on another Calgary news source. The bike path along the Zoo and west towards the Calgary Homeless shelter is full of homeless people.

Helmets and lights are luxuries that these folks can't afford.

Now do you know why I hate bike ninjas with a passion? They are not only a danger to themselves they are a serious danger to fellow cyclists, drivers, peds and anyone and everyone else in their vicinity.

An idiot bike ninja, GOING THE WRONG WAY, almost crashed into ME last night even though I had lights blinking going full tilt. Grrr! I had to take evasive maneuvers to avoid the head-on collision!! :mad:

A light costs five bucks -- get a little flashlight at a flea market and a hose clamp or two. The rear blinky's even cheaper, people just give 'em out.

+1 - though I think that just because your job pays 10cents a can doesn't mean its not a commute.

If these guys had lights or a helmet, they would probably sell them. Also the Sally Ann doesn't really stock hi-vis jackets.

Having cycled by the area many times at night, I used an extra bright light to compensate - it's pretty much dark trail riding. I've had to avoid ninja cyclists/peds/animals several times. I would also ratchet down the speed to give myself a bit of wriggle room.

a brakeless fixie ninja rida snuck up on me last night as I putzed around the neighborhood. Then he kept pace with me, maybe he felt bad about not having lights.

I caught a snip of video on the news that morning, the bike they showed looked awfully new for a homeless guy. Do you have link to the news source?

Great story! And I BET that they continue to ride the wrong side of the road with no lights when they get out of the hospital!
