I'd never heard the term before BF, and (needless to say) I've never heard it outside of BF. Ergo, we must polleth.

I never heard it until I got here. I just think of them as unlucky, and not having a clue about what they're missing, all locked up in their little boxes.

I heard the term back in the 70's with motorcycling and 80's with cycling. In it's original use, it was not intended as derogatory. It was more an expression of the freedom one feels in the relative comparison with motorcycling or cycling vs driving in a car (cage).

I think the term is fine. I have heard it elsewhere and continue to do so. A large vocabulary and the knowledge of when to use it is a good thing.

Rode motorcycles in my younger days - heard the term then (25 years ago or so). I don't think of it as being pejorative. Mostly I feel it denotes the difference in the way drivers and riders experience their commutes.

I know far more "cagers" than I do cyclists, and I regard the vast majority of them positively.

I am on occasion a "cager". I too originally heard it from motorcyclists who used it as a term of their own freedom, not as derogatory toward car drivers. I think more often than not it's used as derogatory here though.

No. I like cars, and many of their drivers. I just hardly ever use one unless the whole family is going somewhere.

I voted yes. When I drive a car (which I've been doing all this week, since I need to transport a lot of heavy stuff from one site to another), I think of myself as a cager, and quickly go stir-crazy for my bike.

If I'm on my bike and passing a long line of gridlocked traffic, I sometimes think, "poor silly cagers."

If I'm actually mad at a driver who did something stupid or malicious, I can usually think of more colorful things to call them.

Mostly I just think of people in cars as inattentive, potential dealers in sudden death with out a clue.

It's what helps keep me alive. I don't trust them to have a clue about what they're doing and they don't disappoint me.
Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get me.

I like cars, but I wish some...operators would just pay more attention to the task at hand, which is driving.

Ditto.
Being a good or bad driver or an a-hole or considerate driver has nothing to do with the term.

I think its a fine term. I feel like I'm in a cage when I drive - so it seems appropriate.

As with so many polls, this one lacked suitable middle ground. Voted yes mostly just b/c I'm peeved abt some news stories I've read in the last 24 hours.

Objectively speaking, though, the vast majority of drivers are good drivers and respect cyclists. It's the few that don't that give the term "cagers" its sometimes negative connotation, IMO. Just like the minuscule percentage of cyclists that blow through stop signs at full tilt give the rest of us cyclists a bad image sometimes...

"bad driver or an a-hole driver" = Those people are appropriately called JAMs (Jack Ass Motorist) by me.

As others have noted, I as well feel like I am in a cage when forced to drive a work truck. And the term cager, when used properly, works fine for me.
