Ran out of Rim Tape, used paint masking tape instead...

So as the tittle said, last night changing tires / tube i ran out of Rim Tape, and with all the stores closed, i had nothing else to turn into but a choice between "Duct Tape" vs. "Masking Tape"

figuring out it's a big hassle to cut a long enough Duct Tape to do the job, i picked the Masking Tape instead.

So, i gave it like 3 rounds, and it holds pretty nicely
However this is only as a "Temporal" measure until i can pick up some proper Rim Tape in my LBS.

However this raised my curiosity to find out what would YOU do, to in a case of emergency.

say for example you get stuck in a trail, or off road in the mountains, and the nearest LBS is 10 miles away?

I would have gone with duct tape. Once you split it, it holds its line off the roll.

Masking Tape is a terrible choice. But good luck.

you replace the rim tape every time you change a tire or tube?

Masking tape is probably too weak to hold back sharper edges inside the rim.
I've used electrical tape in a pinch (and put over 3k miles before changing it out)

problem with duct tape, is that it holds super strong.
it'll be a nightmare to get it back off

that's why i didn't use it.

however if i was really stuck in a pinch, and needed it for a very very long ride, i'd have definitely picked Duct Tape instead. those things are strong in every way.

Duct tape the handyman's secret weapon.
In true Fred fashion I am using duct tape to hold parts of my lighting system together.

WTF? Duct tape doesn't stick to anything, other than duct tape. It will not take any effort to pull a length of duct tape off a rim.

I regularly use strapping tape , the tape with the threads in it, to tape my rims. It works great, lasts years, is super cheap and it weighs a lot less that thick cotton rim tape like velox. Also very easy to find when far away from bike shops.

I've never heard of a rim tape failure during a ride. Is this a Thing that Happens?

I've been using electrical tape for over 30 years and haven't had any problems with it. I prefer it since it's a little thinner than Velox and makes for easier tire changing (the thinner tape lets most of the tire bead sit lower in the rim channel so you can more easily get the last bit of the bead up and over the edge). I use two layers to get enough strength so the edges of spoke holes don't abrade the tube.

The only time I've ever seen a rim tape actually 'fail' as opposed to just being out of the proper position is with the rubber strips which can tear at the valve hole. But then only a couple short pieces of tape are needed to fasten the ends of the rubber strip to the rim on either side of the valve hole - just about any type of tape will do for that.

Why am I changing my rim tape out on the trail? If I've discovered a place where it isn't doing it's job, I'd slap on a dollar bill or maybe even a tire patch. If the whole strip came off, I'd try really hard to get it back on until I get home. And where am I going to get duct tape in the mountains?

Wrapped around your Nalgene bottle, of course.

The better question is: where am I going to get a dollar bill?

i gotta admit...my rim tape IS masking tape. the stock plastic rim "protector" (i don't call it tape because it's not adhesive) was sliding around like a mother. i put on the masking tape 300 miles ago and have had no problems, even w/ several tire changes. just make sure that you have no folds when you apply it.

You go riding without a dollar bill to use for booting tires?

Do you at least have a Clif bar wrapper?

I used silk medical tape before. With newer rims (double wall, no exposed spoke nipples). There is less need for thicker tape or rubber.

whatever floats your boat. kinda depends on the wheel in question and if the spoke nipples are in wells. I've used electrical tape but just bought some really nice cloth rim tape for the next wheels I do. I always keep a roll of electrical tape in my rack trunk. not sure why though - never had to use it.

you can substitute $1 bill with a similar sized denim patch.
I'm sure everyone must have at least one pair of worn out jeans to use as tire boots.

Hockey tape. If you don't have that, first aid tape.

Yes, I've had rim tape fail during a ride.
