My road bike is fairly quiet with the exception of brake cable housings trying to imitate a snare drum against my top tube.

My commuter, however, is about a thousand miles past lube time, and it sounds like I'm riding an old wicker couch to work. Also, when I jump speed bumps the kickstand makes a ferocious noise that sounds like my frame just broke in half.

I swear my BB creaks, it only does it when the right pedal goes from 3-6 o'clock in high gear. Of course the LBS claimed it wa the pedals, So I replaced them and still have noise.

I miss old school pre-gangsta hip hop. You can't go wrong with some old A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Fu-Schnickens, The UMCs, etc. Oh man, I'm getting nostalgic.

People pulling up next to me and yelling things. It's quite annoying, but people around here do not care much for the biking crowd.

It's coming either from the rear wheel or the chainring/BB. Bought the bike less than 4 months ago.

I can't stand the sound of my fenders rattling when I'm on rough pavement.

I hate it when the wire from my bike computer is loose and rubs on the front tire. I seriously need to find some zipties somewhere and FIX THAT.

I hate the sound of my BFs squeaky bike chain. I keep telling him to GREASE HIS CHAIN and he refuses to do it. It's an expensive folding bike, too.

I've become a squeaky chain nazi. I hear EVERY SQUEAKY chain within 1 km and pretty soon I'm going to start yelling "GREASE YOUR CHAIN!" at people.

Other things I hate the sound of:

Goddamn loud motorcycles, that fat tattooed biker freaks ride. They should be outlawed.

I also hate sirens that start up right beside me when it's a residential street and there are no cars around. I actually flipped off an ambulance driver that did that to me, cause it startled me so bad I nearly wiped out.

I'm trying to think of sound that annoys me, and I'm coming up empty. Between bike trouble and car trouble, I'll take bike trouble any day.

Beer bottles clinking together in my backpack, it's the sound of beerfoam running down
the back of my hand 30 minutes in the future when I pop one open.
Six-packs have dividers between the bottles, why not 12-packs?

mike, here's what I do: I usually carry an extra shirt when riding, so I can wear something unstinky into a store if I am making a shopping run. If I buy more than one bottle of something, and fear clinking, I use the shirt I'm not wearing as padding. A small towel would work as well.

Fixed that for you. Bike comes on the 2nd line, otherwise it doesn't rhyme.

After inspection last night, it appears that my chain's making noise against the sprockets, not the pulleys (for the most part). And, my chain's a hair over 1/16 past 12" (each link is about 1/100 past spec), so that probably explains it.

Oddly, looking at the chain meshing with the cassette I see some gaps on the lower side of the cassette (i.e, the side not under tension). According to the Sheldon page that means that the cassette is worn more than the chain (!), which apparently means I need a new cassette too.

Guess I just need a new bike.

Bump, bump, bump

Not annoying, but scary. One night I was riding home past the cemetery when I heard a bump in the darkness behind me. Not daring to look back, I quickened my pace. But, the bumping noise continued behind me.

I stopped and turned to see what it was. Coming down the road behind me was a coffin, standing on end, bumping from side to side - BUMP, BUMP, BUMP.

Terrified for my life, I turned and rode even faster. Behind me, the coffin came faster - BUMP, BUMP, BUMP!

Ahead of me, there was a branch that had fallen from a tree. I reached down and grabbed it as I rode by. I then threw it over my shoulder at the coffin - but it just splintered when it hit the coffin and the coffin continued coming faster - BUMPITY, BUMPITY, BUMPITY!

I turned the corner onto my street and raced through my front gate, the coffin right behind me. I hopped off my bike, swung it around and and threw it right at the coffin. SMASH! - the bike bounced off the unnaturally strong wood of the coffin and it continued after me.

I dashed into my house and slammed the door, but the coffin crashed right through it. I ran upstairs and grabbed my shotgun off the wall display. I blasted the coffin with both barrels, but the shot bounced harmlessly off the coffin as it continued up the stairs - BUMP, CLOMP, BUMP, CLOMP!

Desperate and scared to death, I jumped into the bathroom and locked the door - knowing it would do no good. The coffin Banged against the door, once ..., twice ..., and on the third time, the door exploded and the coffin came forward.

In desperation I reached out my hand and grabbed whatever I could. All that was there was a bottle of cough syrup so I threw it at the coffin.

The bottle shattered, the cough syrup poured on the coffin, and the coffin stopped.
