26x1.9 tire recommendation
Looking for semi slick tire to replace a tire on an Electra Townie. The stock tires are shiite as the casing is separating from the bead. Don't want to replace with the same thing. Considered the Conti Town & Country but reviews say to avoid if made in India.
The rear tire is very hard to get off with the internal shifting hub so flat protection is desired. |
I have 26 x 1.85 Michelin City tires with a reflective sidewall on my mountain bike. So far, so good! They were $40 shipped to my door...

The finest semi-slick known to humanity, I give you, (drum roll) THE GEAX EVOLUTION!

Not really slicks but Schwalbe has two road tires in that size range that might be good, the Big Apple, size 50 x 559 and the Marathon Plus, size 47 x 559. The Marathon Plus is supposed to be about the most puncture resistant bike tire made.

If you don't mind something 1 tenth of an inch larger ... try what I have Innova Swifter. I love them!

Serfas Drifters come in 2" and are almost the same as the Conti T&C,but they do have puncture protection and optional reflective sidewalls. I've ridden both and highly recommend the Drifters.
They're pricey, but I seriously love my Schwalbe Marathon Supremes in 2". They handle and stick like motorcycle sportbike radials, wear really well, and I've had zero flats in over a year of use. Very light for 2" wide tires. I also like Vittoria Adventures in 1.75". A touch heavy, but they roll well, last well, and I had zero flats with them. |
I just these - not sure if they come in the width you want. they look smother than some other tires mentioned. I've heard it mentioned here and there on the forums too.
Also, a little plug for REI. If you have them delivered to your local store there is no shipping fee. Wilderness Trail Bikes Slickasaurus Tire - 26 x 1.5 http://www.rei.com/product/722453 |
are the marathon supremes really 2.0" wide? My 26" big apples are 2.0, but the 20" ba's I got wound up to only be 1.75 (dimensionally, nominally they still claim 2.0; I am disappointed!!)
(ps-> I am a big ba fan, at least the 26" ones; I am also a couple hundred miles into a pair of 700x32 marathon supremes but I have no idea what the 2.0 supremes would be like) |

Ah, but note that the old Evolutions are no more. They are now the Evolution 2 and they are *not* the same tire. I ordered the E1 from Jenson on the recommendations here and I was shipped the E2 (despire Jenson showing the E1 on their website). Not sure if I like them, they seem to have more rolling resistance than my old Kenda Krosses. Jury is still out for me. Couldn't beat the price, though.

Another vote for the Big Apple (26x2), fast enough on the smooth, smooth enough on the rough. I commute 2x6miles in all weather and have no complaints.
