Need a solid bike for commuting

I just started looking for a bike to commute to work and I've found there's not a lot of used bikes around... so my only option right now is a cheap new bike... the three that I've looked at so far are:
Rocky Mountain Metro 5
Miele Verona
Devinci - I didn't see what model. (600$)

do any of you have any thoughts on these brands? which are better, etc?
Thanks so much!

I've looked through lots of ads for used bikes... but a lot of them are terrible, and there doesn't seem to be many available right now.

devincis look heavy and slow

Is it possible to test-ride any of them? Sometimes one bike will just feel right, while a nearly identical bike from another manufacturer won't.
Rocky Mountains have good wheels, if that's any help.

How long is your commute? Do you want to ride in rain, or only in pleasant weather? Do you want to do this year-round, or just for the summer? Will you ride during the dark?

There is nothing particularly wrong with any of the bikes you mention (although I have never heard of the Davinci). But for a short sunny commute, you could commute on a child's BMX and not have too awful a time with it. For longer rides, you want to think road bike rather than hybrid; for all-weather commuting, you want to pick a bike that can take full fenders. Also, buy from a good bike shop, not from Wal-Mart or Target or a similar box store.

if money is an issue, you can buy a 14 speed touring bike (Dawes Lightning Sport) for much less... it *is* a solid bike but it does have "retro" style stem shifters... but its a solid commuter bike with eyelets for fenders and rack. I got mine about 2 years ago for 240.00 (which included shipping...).

the seller is "chicabike" on ebay...

Yes, as someone else asked -
1. How long is your commute?
2. Do you want to ride in rain, or only in pleasant weather?
3. Do you want to do this year-round, or just for the summer? (and related, where do you live and do you get snow?)
4. Will you ride during the dark? (though this doesn't make much of a difference in which bike to buy)
