As for cycling specific, I wear helmet with mirror, gloves, and shoes.

Hot Weather:
I usually wear cargo shorts and a button-up cotton or linen shirt often with long sleeves for sun protection. Wool or nylon socks.

Cold Weather:
Nix the cotton. Switch to wool or synthetics.

I wear bike shorts, often underneath some other shorts or pants, and...whatever. Today it's pair of cargo shorts and my Frozen Dead Guy t-shirt (bonus points to anyone who knows about the Frozen Dead Guy).

Pretty much exactly the same, but with the addition of some loose nylon shorts on top of the lycra. I work in an office with a lot of women, and I feel pretty weird about walking around in skintight shorts when I come in...

lycra shorts or bibs
short-sleeve jersey
helmet (with mirror)
SPD shoes
whatever socks I grab out of the sock drawer that morning

In cool weather, I wear all of the above, plus:
tights
thin long sleeve sweater or waterproof-breathable jacket

Below freezing, I wear the sweater and jacket and add:
winter gloves
headband
winter boots (winter bike has platforms, not SPDs)

Almost no bicycle-specific clothes:

Cargo berms
Wicking T-shirt
Ankle socks
Converse sneakers
Helmet
Wraparound safety glasses acting as sunglasses and dirt shield

I used to wear fingerless gloves too but these days I do without. It's much too hot and humid here in Singapore.

This time of year, it's:

Shorts-style bathing suit (good ventilation, easy wash, quick dry, and mesh lining helps to control the "boys")
Wicking t-shirt
Crocs
Helmet

Still working out what I'll do once the cold weather comes back. This is my first year commuting, and I definitely plan on riding through the winter. Cold does not get to me too much, especially in my legs, especially when I'm doing something active, like cycling. I wear shorts as everyday casual wear outside as a matter of course until the temps are well below 50 anyway. DC winters tending to be on the milder side oftentimes, maybe tights under longish cargo shorts and some warm socks/shoes. Multiple layers on top w/ wicking t-shirt as the base layer to help keep me dry and keep the cold wind out. Add some cycling gloves, too probably.

Apparently you've spent some time in Nederland CO. What's my prize?

When I lived near there (Boulder) and my commute was 2 mi of flat roads, I rode in whatever I was wearing at work that day, but now that my commute is long and hilly enough to work up a sweat, I wear cycling clothes and change at work. In summer it's helmet with mirror, jersey, shorts, gloves, bike shoes. On the coldest days in winter I also have thermal underwear (top and bottom), tights, windbreaker, booties, balaclava, mittens. Somewhere in between the rest of the year.

You win a Frozen Dead Guy postcard (if I can find it!)

My bro lives in Berthoud -- we hang at Eldora when I visit him, with a side trip to A Basin if I'm lucky. I usually time my annual trip to coincide with Frozen Dead Guy Days -- if possible, next time, I'd like to hit that and also the skijoring at Loveland. You Coloradoans know how to have fun, you do.

Today:
- Prana kneelength semi-baggy shorts with mid-thigh wicking sport underwear
- wicking t-shirt
- ankle sox
- Adidas mountainbike shoes
- road hazard orange helmet
- Rudy Project yellow lens cycling glasses (I wear these in all conditions - I don't use sunglasses any more)
- Cycling gloves

When the weather is not so hot I typically wear baggy style mountain bike shorts that have sewn-in lycra bike shorts with synthetic chamois. I can't find any of my old "standard" cycling shorts for the hot weather, so I have been wearing mid-thigh and knee-length running shorts these days.

Do you guys still wear cycling- or athletic-specific clothing in the winter? This is my first year commuting, and I was kind of looking forward to just wearing my work clothes on the bike once it cools down. Is that impractical?

That's what I do. I only go six miles each way. I have a chainguard, but if you don't you can roll or band the pant leg. Normal gloves work fine (like leather gloves or wool rag. Ski gloves if it goes below 0 F). I do have balaclava for when it gets below freezing. I have wool underlayer clothes for when it gets really cold for around here (teens or less; very rare here). I usually wear a fleece jacket (or rain jacket), but I have a normal wool coat for when it is very cold (below teens). I wear a wool cap when it is below 50 or so. If it is below 20 or so (pretty rare), I put on Toastie neoprene toe covers over my normal shoes, or I wear boots if there is snow about. I have one pair of running underwear that blocks wind that I may wear if it is very cold and windy.

So, other than the balaclava (which comes right off before going into work), it is pretty much what I'd wear walking actively about in the cold, or walking to work from a mile away (except for cycling I dress as as if it were about 15 degrees warmer). For most of the winter in DC, I get by with normal work clothes (which are khakis, button-up shirt, brown shoes, etc) with a fleece jacket, a cap, and leather gloves.

In cold-weather cities like Copenhagen and Amsterdam, where commuting by bike is ubiquitous and more common than by car, pretty much all the commuting cyclists wear their normal clothes all year round.

I think it depends on where you live and how you ride. My work clothes wouldn't be well suited for riding in the cold and I get sweaty no matter what the weather is like. I pretty much always change when I get to work unless I decide to shorten my trip by taking the train part of the way.
