Best way to get to washington times from maryland

Thinking of switching jobs.. And got a new possibility at the washinton times off of route 50. I live in Burtonsville, md. Anyone know what is the best and easiest way to commute by bicycle there?

Can't say I know that part of town, but looks like a heck of a long ride. 20 miles or so by vehicle taking the 95 and 495, and probably longer by bike.

Once you get to College Park, you can take the Northwest Branch Trail from inside the beltway to close to work, but you'll have to figure out the start and end details to get there.

Sorry! Couldn't resist.
Now for the serious help.

I don't know that Burtonsville area very well, but if you can get to College Park and UM you have a couple of options.
Could take the trail over to Lake Artemesia, then NE Branch, switch to the NW Branch, south at 38th Street in Brentwood, the first right onto Allison, turns into Varnum at the DC line, then take 20th St south, bear left on Queens Chapel. Gets you to NY Ave almost where you want to be.
Alternate from College Park would be the other Queen's Chapel Road / route 500. The traffic on it stinks but its a straighter shot. At the DC line take Eastern to 20th and south from there.

If you come up with a good route from Burtonsville to College Park, post it.

added - I guess if you are coming down Old Columbia Pike, you might as well take route 29 on to New Hampshire. Inside the beltway go right on Oakview. You'll pick up the NW Branch at the end.

Thanks CC_rider, that is a starting point

I was thinking of riding down briggs channey and eventually making it to rhode island ave and college park, that area is pretty decent for riding. Even where REI is, there are a bunch of cyclists that meet i think fridays for some group rides. But after that, the area is pretty ghetto. And the potholes are huge.

I ride from Arlington to the Army Research Lab in Adelphi four days a week, so I am familiar with part of your likely route. I can recommend taking Riggs road from Powder Mill down to the Northwest Branch trail. You could also pick up the trail from New Hampshire, which I used to do, but the traffic on New Hampshire is pretty horrible and it is NOT a bike friendly street. Once on the NW branch trail, I think you can ride all the way south past Bladensburg Rd and then make your way through the neighborhood streets to Rt. 50. If those neighborhoods are too sketchy (not sure, since I haven't ridden there) you could also take Varnum across to 18th street (bike lanes and/or bike route) and come down till you hit NY Ave. I used to ride that route when I lived in Capitol Hill, and it isn't too bad.
