First Commute Yesterday!

I rolled onto the road with my lights flashing yesterday morning. The weather was perfect, and I was one of the first people at work.

My wife and I are making it on one car since our second car bit the dust last month. I am getting everywhere primarily via bicycle. We live in a small town with everything, including work, close, so it's working out.

How are you finding it? I find commuting to work is a much easier and less stressful journey than getting the bus or train.

Congratulations on joining the ranks of bike commuters. Like you, when our second car died we never replaced it. In the three years since going down to one car, my husband and I never needed or missed having a second one. It also helps living in a very bike-friendly town.

Congrats! Over here, Dallas is not the friendliest to bikes. If you can commute to work everything else just falls into place. Keep it up!

I hear people say this, but in my experience actually riding on the streets of Dallas, it is not that bad. It was worse when I first started commuting in Arlington, but...
The big thing that the entire metroplex has going for it is that there are so many different ways to get everywhere...

well, weight loss definitely depends on diet and distances/times...

I am fat and I ride everyday to work, but I only ride 6 km each way (4 miles).

To loose weight I have started running.

But back to the OP, congrats on biking to work. You will love it... I think the money you save on gas alone would be enough to keep you on the bike.... But what really keeps me going is I have plenty of time to think about my day. I feel great, awake, fresh, ready to go when I get to work.

Welcome to the club. Be careful; don't take unnecessary risks and don't get complacent. Or to quote from STAR WARS: "Don't get cocky kid!"

Kudos to you. I started bicycle commuting on Bike to Work Day 2008 and could not force myself to stop. Of course I never really tried. The main reason I commute by bike is it is FUN. I am 54 and my round trip is 30 miles. I am currently commuting by bike 3 days a week because I also run and lift weights. Heck, i am an old guy, I can only do so much. I highly recommend some study on safe riding skills and your state's bicycle laws. Best, Old Al.

Beware: it's addictive. Soon you'll find yourself doing anything you can to avoid being in a car.

Great to see people speaking so highly of commuting! I'll be starting my 20 mi round trip ride to school in a month. My girlfriend thinks I'm nuts.
