72, now working part time, commuting about ten miles a day when I do. Past commutes over the last forty years have been up to 22 miles.

44, 15 mile rt, cut back from 5 days a week to 3 since I've started climbing a ladder to scrape and paint the house. The bad knees can't take both the cycling and the ladder all week.

Spanky-G-Master 08-14-09 08:07 AM

28 riding 10-20 miles round trip (700'+ of elevation change) with mountain bike trails as an option. Plus 15-25 miles of single track on the weekends.

I'm 20 and only started commuting with bike recently.

Most direct route there is 4 miles one way, so 8 miles each day unless I wander off. Going to school is a similar distance (3.5-4 miles) and I can usually get there as fast as public transportation due to the idle waiting I skip out on. The weekends allow me to go explore the streets a bit more so I usually get in 15-30 miles whenever I go out then.

im 20 and do a 26km rt couple times a week

Bob N. 08-15-09 08:59 AM

43 years old, 14 miles RT, 1-3 times a week, rarely 3 :(

huie 08-15-09 09:53 AM

24 years old and I make a 45km (28 miles) round trip three or more times a week. Unfortunately today is another commute day even though it's the weekend.

JPMacG 08-15-09 11:08 AM

53 and I do an 18 mile RT with lots of climbing 2-3 times a week.

bikeveg 08-15-09 01:07 PM

I'm 19 and do an 8mi rt commute to school. I plan on commuting by bike for the rest of my life if possible :)

It's funny, but the older I get, the longer my commute gets. In grade school, I used to ride my bike 0.5 miles each way. In junior high, it was 1 mile. I used to walk to high school since it was so close, but in college I rode again about 2 miles to class. My first job had a 4 mile bike commute. My second job was 8 miles each way. Now I'm 40 and biking 14 miles each way. In two weeks, we'll be moving into a new house where my commute will be 21 miles each way. I'm not sure how long this trend will continue, but if my commute gets much longer, I'm going to have to start working fewer hours.

I'm 19 and my commute is 14 miles round trip. The longest I can practically make it is 16 miles, which I may do next semester.

gnome 08-16-09 03:22 AM

33 and 15km round trip commute.

lverhagen 08-16-09 08:25 PM

I'm 16 years old and have been commuting to high school for two years now with a 6 mi. round trip. Compared to most people on this forum, I'm a toddler. Hope to do it the rest of my life nonetheless!

38, I get dropped off at work (no showers and work in an office setting) then commute 15 miles home. I started out commuting RT, then had my wife drop me half way, then switched to commuting on a MB which took more energy and created more sweat so i opted for getting drop off at office. I am going back to a road bike so I might go back to halfway to work...

Jagaer 08-19-09 08:33 PM

27, male, 22 kms total per day, 5 days per week. On my 3rd yr of bike commute

imstumpedru 08-19-09 08:37 PM

36 yr old make currently measly 6 miles rt. been commuting off and on 15 yrs now my longest was 14 miles one way.

Neekstar 08-19-09 11:17 PM

21 yr old, i have a 20 mile RT to work and a 25 mile RT to school.

jfz 08-20-09 09:51 AM

I am 56 and commute 20 miles round trip. When I ride every day I am a bit tired at the end of the week but enjoy it all the same and only take another 5 minutes or so.

I have been riding for over 50 years along with running, hiking, walking and Tai Chi. I think if you stay active and take care of yourself you should be able to bicycle well into "old age"!

bikeJedi 08-21-09 03:01 PM

30 with a 4 mile commute.

Jagaer 08-21-09 08:51 PM

I was interested in the number of riders and the average distance.

There are 79 data points (as some of you didn't specify how far you rode)

Issues
Bikers that rode 2-3 times per week are included in the commuting data (as it is #kms per day commute)
Some of you didn't feel like sharing your age exactly, so mid-30s is input as 35 etc...

The 'Age' X-Axis on the scatter graph is incorrect, but I couldn't show the average distance and have the age range correct.

PM if you want a copy of the excel file.

harpdog 08-22-09 04:34 AM

52 and 16 mile round trip

Thanks for doing this, it makes me feel a little less ancient to know I'm in the most common age group.

cyclingrj 08-22-09 06:19 AM

I'm 49 and commute 34 miles RT. Been doing this commute on Monday-Wednesday-Friday, just riding home on Tuesday and Thursday.
