Can you return a bike to the manufacturer

I bought a Trek Soho but I am not happy with it. I don't like it and at the end I don't ride it. No one from my family can use it either. Can I return it to the manufacturer? I didn't think it's possible but I read a thread here where one guy was going to do just that and people didn't say you can't so...

:D Don't laugh please I am new to the bike world - I've been riding for some time and I've never driven a car (i.e. I've produced very little emissions, at least CO2 :D:D).

Regards

Simple answer - no.

s5s 08-23-09 07:04 PM

dam/\/. Well what can you do - I'll be stuck with it. Any ideas what to do with it? I'll ride it when it rains, probably.

s5s 08-23-09 07:06 PM

Oh yeah and for the rest - don't buy those stupid bikes - so many parts when something goes wrong you don't know where to look for the problem. Also a belt is not much better than a stainless steel chain so....

It is more of a matter who you bought it from. Unless it was REI or maybe performance (neither carry Trek) you are pretty much up a creek without a paddle. You may try to talk to the bike shop or sell it.

A bike should not have frequent mechanical problems unless it is being abused or was not set up properly by the shop that you bought it from. It also has a warranty which should be honored by the shop and many shops offer 6 months or 1 year of free service. If having mechanical problems they should rectify them.

What are the problems that you are having as your post was not at all specific?

A bicycle is actually quite simple mechanically and anyone dependent on one for transportation should try to learn basic maintenance. The Soho has minimal adjustments to learn about. I have a bike I built up with a Shimano 8 speed gear hub and mine is working fine.

OP didn't state that there was any mechanical problem, just that "I don't like it". Not many big-ticket items can be returned for that reason, only for defects or warranty failures.

Until you get to the mechanics forum where he asks how to fix the damage from running into a curb....

He was talking about some paint scraped off the crank. That isn't a "mechanical problem".

What about Ebay or Craiglist? If do not like something, I put it up for sale. The item gets recycled and my loss gets reduced, sometimes substantially and sometimes just a bit.

To be quite honest I didn't pay that much attention. Between the idea of "returning to manufacturer" and the post in mechanics I was done paying attention :P

Wait until you see the post in FG/SS where he tried to adjust his own headset and the bearings all dropped on the ground and he broke a screwdriver (or was it a hex wrench, he isn't sure) "fixing" it. :roflmao2:

...you guys are making this up. Aren't you?

First if he means bearings they should be easy to pick up. A bearing is a single assembly of parts. Perhaps he meant the steel balls, which are part of a bearing. Is the OP by chance a :troll:? Or does he honestly not know that much about bikes? If he doesn't why is he takeing bearing assemblies apart?

I went to this awful restaurant last night, I plan on returning their food later today, do you think they'll take it back?

I might be interested in buying it. Of course we would have to deduct the cost of the chipped paint and the missing bearing. What size is it?

Darwin was 100% right :P I think it's extra special in the headset thread how he says it was making noise when he hits curbs.

treebound 08-24-09 07:59 PM

Does the OP say anywhere how long he/she has owned it?

Long enough to ding it up.

Your answer, NO.

For the sake of all that is holy stand up and take responsibility for yourself. If you made a poor buying decision, it was you that did it and not the fault of anyone else. Accept it, learn what you can from it, move on, and don't try to foist your mistake on someone else's shoulders. You'll become a better person for it.
