They just don't get it.

A buddy from work yesterday offered me a ride home from the Light Rail station, it's 6 miles most of it hills but when i said thanks but no thanks he just looked at me like i was nuts.
I would rather ride the bike then ride in a car.

I'd rather ride the bike, then NOT ride in the car, but I would rather ride a bike than ride in a car.

I get asked/axed that question when it's raining out. You're going to ride in this? I can take you home if you'd like? (I wish I got that offer when I was single) Aren't you afraid your tires are going to slide???

I used to get that from my then sister in-law. However, she would offer to meet me at a supermarket a half mile from my house. Lets see, spend 10 min trying to cram a large bike into a small car or take 3 min to ride to my house. duh

They do seem to have a hard time believing that we really, really would rather ride the bike, don't they? We tell them that this is voluntary and they seem to accept it until sunset or (gasp!) bad weather. Then the doubt shows up again. It's kind of amusing, but it's also exasperating.

We're not crazy, by the way. I suppose we are a bit abnormal, though.

The auto-addicts, on the other hand, they're crazy.

How odd to realize that a cager also has a choice between a bike and a car. That's the real mystery they don't get.

I got offered a ride to the train when it was over 100 degrees last month. I respectfully declined and rode the whole way home Its not so bad if you keep moving.

I had friends offer me a ride home from a concert a few months ago. It had turned to a pretty heavy rain while we were inside.

Knowing the ride was only about 1-2 miles home I opted to bike, and got some weird looks/comments. I didn't really want to take my front wheel off and try and work my 59cm Motobecane into either compact car.

The best part, we were all headed to a friends house afterward. I beat the car that stopped for beer by a good 10 minutes, and was less than 5 minutes behind the first car.

Note to self though - road slicks SUCK in the rain.

Yeah, I have run AVENIR City Slickers on a mountain bike and they're like hoses, but once the water washes the road grime from the tire, they're like glue in the rain.

My grandma offered my uncle to give me a ride today.

"For the last time, grandma, I rode because I enjoy it. If I wanted to drive, I would have."

My wife gets my whole cycling thing for the most part. Even the nutty videos. But every time the weather gets bad, she suggests I catch a Taxi to work (and back I presume). 15 years together and STILL - "Why don't you just call a cab?" even though I have not done that even once.

The only Taxi rides are those taking me to the doctor if I am really, really sick and the weather is sucky too. I can remember three times in the past 25 years.

I guess I'm the weird one here. I don't like riding in crappy weather (cold rain, bitter cold, outrageous heat) and would gladly take a ride if one were proferred.

I remember a group of my friends hearing that I voluntarily biked 45 miles to get to a friend's house. I couldn't tell if people were appauled or shocked (or both) that someone would choose to do such a thing.

Don't worry. If you ride long enough you will soon be "the guy who rides to work". My coworkers stopped asking me about riding back in january-february. They were more surprised that I drove in when the temperatures got really bad for a while. Haven't driven into work since then .

Haha I get that too... If my helmet isn't sitting on my desk my coworkers ask if there is something wrong with me .

I think it's nice they are trying to help and taking the time to understand who we are. When people at work comment and ask questions about my bike addiction, I am humbled they are interested in me and what I do.

It's been some years since anyone at work, or in the family: a.)asked me about my riding; b.)offered to drive me anywhere.

Guess I convinced them.

Last one was my mother, as I recall now; she was SHOCKED that I rode to her house (she lived in the next town over)! I think it was a form of punishment on her part to load me up with a complete set of picture-window curtains and rods to take home for the wife.
