A Tale of Two Doggies.

Riding thru a neighborhood on my regular commute yesterday (even though i was just going to the store). I was moving at a fair clip, not pushing it, and I spy TWO pit bulls, one on each side of me converging on me at high speed. So I brake hard and I shout "GO AWAY!" as loud as I can. Fortunately, they veer off at the last second. Whew! I'm kinda scared and shaken up. I didn't really think they wanted to attack, but I sure didn't want to hit one, which I was sure was going to happen since they had me from both sides, and nowhere to go if they closed more. I start on my way again, and then got a bit ticked off, so I turn around and go looking for the owner. I see a woman on the sidewalk and ask her if she knows whose dogs they are. She points to a house about 50 feet away. I'm about to go up to the house when further up the road I see a guy with a leash walking toward the dogs. I ask him if they are his dogs. After he admits it I tell him he must be aware of the local ordinance against loose dogs. After he admits this as well, I tell him what just happened. Then I asked him if it happens again, which dog did he prefer I crash into. He mumbled something as he went to get his dogs. If I see the dogs again I'm going to report him every time I see them, since I now know his address. I hadn't particularly noticed these dogs b4 but I am going to now. Never , ever had much of a dog encounter b4, and this one turned out not to be too serious, but this scenario has the potential to turn out badly, especially since there more than a few kids riding bikes here. My only concern is should I have called the cops? Still not too late.

At least there is a leash law! Where I live the city has a leash law, but the county could care less.

The neighbor's reaction sort of makes me think that these dogs may have a history in the neighborhood. I'd report them and not wait for another incident.

I would have reported the owner to animal control. I bike to work at 0530 and there are rare cases when a dog chases me. I've followed(chase) the dog back home and knocked on the door to advise the owner. Once I got to work, I call animal control.
Besides biting someone, a loose dog can get hit by a car.
