Kickstand Mounting?
 

Possibly a very obvious answer, but where on an old mtn bike('90Trek 950ST) would I mount the stand? There is no plate, the only place I could see is through the hole in the bottom crosspiece between sides of rear triangle(just behind crank). The hole runs inline with the bike. Or is that for something else?

Possibly a rear stay mount the only option?

A basic Greenfield kick stand will mount to the chain stays right behind the BB shell.

I bought one of the Greenfield kickstands [I think they call it a stabilizer] that mounts on the stays back near the axle. It fit perfectly and works great. The way it is designed it is very stable and does not damage the finish.

I have read of problems with some people's heels hitting it, and others with disc brakes not being able to use it. My heel comes close . . . but is not a problem. Someone complained that their's broke when they tried sitting on the bike with the stand holding them up. Greenfield specifically states not to use it this way.

And finally, the only other complaints I have read about was it breaking during installation. Anyone with a modicum of mechanical finesse will not have a problem. It mounts with plastic sleeves for protecting the bike's finish. It doesn't have to be overtightened to be stable.

+ 100 on The Stabilizer. I couldn't mount the normal Greenfield because of where the cables routed. But this baby went on without a hitch, and personally I like the looks of it, too. My friend jokes that it combines with my crazy lights to make me look like a policebike, which doesn't hurt in the "not getting your bike stolen" department. :)

The hole I was speaking would be towards the front of the chainstays behind BB on a crosspiece between stays and runs inline with bike.

Or are you just talking about mounting with bracket that goes around chainstay, which is like the Stabilizer mounting?

Between the BB and the crosspeice there will be a trapezoidal void. That is where the kickstand mounts. Kickstand below chainstays, plate above chainstays and bolt through the opening between the chainstays.

Mount kickstand as stated above by CAcycling. Don't tighten down too tight, as to crush.

The hole you are refering to on the chainstay bridge is for mounting fenders.

Can you guys provide a pic on how this "stablizer" kickstand looks on your bike in the up and down position?

I'm considering the kickstand but my LBS doesn't have any in-stock and will only special order it and will only give me a store credit if I return it.
