Advise on purchasing Trek FX 7.3

Hi all,

This is my first time posting on the forum, so nice to meet everyone.

I hooked up with a craigslister for an Trek FX 7.3. He said that it was about 6 month old, and is asking for about $450. I understand that the 2009 version has MRP of $600-700, but the 08 version was significantly less. Is there any way of differentiating between the two. And what prices should I offer for each version.

Thanks for your help.

I paid $530 for a brand new 08.

If it's in perfect condition I'd be willing to pay at most, $375 for an 09, if I was desperate.

Nothing major changed between the two, just the price, really. Most bikes went up ~20% for '09.

It's common to pay 10-60% for a good condition bike, since you get no warranty, or guarantee it's not been stolen.

If he can prove it's not been stolen, don't pay over 325ish, IMO.

Yeah, that's too high, but you may not be able to get this guy to see reason -- particularly if the reason why he's selling it is because he bought it and then didn't ride it. People like that feel that what they're selling is practically new and they want a practically-new price for it. Explain to him about a)no warranty b)no way of knowing how much it's been ridden, or how well it's been cared for, or whether it's been damaged (although there are ways to intelligently guess, obviously). You might also ask for proof of purchase to verify that it's not stolen.

Thanks for the info. I will keep them in mind when haggling.

On another note. It really sucks that the prices went up by so much. what a difference a year can make. sigh.

Thanks for the advise. Maybe I can work out a deal with him.

Now i'm leaning towards simply go back to LBS and buy a bike from them with a peace of mind. Any suggestions for a hybrid bike around $400 to $500?

Also, when do stores generally hold those "end of year" sales? perhaps i can ride into a bargain.

Sorry guys, I just realized that I posted on the wrong section of the forum
