Smiling cyclists
Just a new observation I want to share...
There is a stretch of road that I cycle through on my commute that's next to/ parallel to the highway, not a pretty place to bike... Every time I past by a cyclist on that road, we always nod, or smile. It's like there is unspoken bond amongst bike commuters. I thought that's very sweet...certain adds to my commuting experience.

I don't look closely at other driver's faces in cars because I'm afraid of dying.
If I start watching them to see if they see me I might accidentally think they weren't driving intentionally straight for me. They're always trying to run you down.

That's total nonsense. I've only seen a few girls smile at me. Though, they were in full kit on a road bike too. That's different

The day I start feeling cameraderie with people just because they're going to work, the economy's going to be in much worse shape than it is now.

I'm not sure about the general bike commuting population, but on weekend rides I often exchange nods/smiles/small waves with other cyclists. I thought this was common practice. A lot of them will say 'hi' or 'good morning' when passing and I'll do the same when passing others. When I have the camping bags strapped to the bike, I get a ton of shout outs or thumbs ups from passing cyclists. I find these exchanges less common among bike commuters but I still do it, and every once in a while, someone will reciprocate.

Like so much in life, it depends:
When I'm pulling my daughter on the trail-a-bike, almost always. When I'm by myself, especially if I'm wearing the full roadie kit, almost never.

On my commute - not too many smiling cyclists.
On my local mtn bike trails though - it's a friggin' social love fest. EVERYBODY says 'hi' or 'great riding' or something positive. I'm pretty positive, but even I was like WTF? Now I love it out there and I'm one of them!

And Jeep owners,
And bagged trucks give eachother a hop,
and other sport trucks/cars throw a rev of the engine,
and...
But I guess it's nice.

I always smile or wave or whatnot at people when I'm out, both bikers and runners. Anybody out on the road who's actually expending energy to make themselves healthier or save a little pollution is fine by me. Sometimes hardcore roadies will ignore my friendly (and therefore fredly) behavior, but most people are pretty cool.
I did just about give some lady a heart attack this morning when I said "on the left" when passing her. I didn't notice her (head down climbing) until I was about 10 feet from her, so I think I just startled her. She just about dived over the guardrail.

thats the attitude, you guys should be ashamed!
for some reason i find it important to greet people (good morning, evening, night), cause it seems like society needs a lot of more thankfullness... i know a couple of guys on the road now, always yell hello! or wave

The joggers and walkers I pass wave and say hello, the folks working in the yards will wave back and say hello but 98% of the bike riders Ive met have been contra flow, usually a 40oz or similar hanging in a plastic bag from their bar and don't say anything. The only one who ever spoke called me a ***** as I passed..Oh wait..There is one older gent who rides a beach cruiser, I pass him every afternoon on the commute home.. He finally waved after my what had to be my 100Th "How you doing"..

I like the commuter nod. When the weather is really bad, and I pass someone just as happily miserable as I am, it's usually a full on commuter smile and wave instead of the nod.

I'm generally pretty outgoing, and will acknowledge other cyclists with a nod or wave. There ain't nothin' wrong with being friendly.

Perhaps it comes from all the assumptions we see in here that anybody who does not offer or return a greeting is some kind of snob purposely trying to offend you. I know it hurts, but you you gotta understand that the world not only does not revolve around you, it usually doesn't even notice you.
