I was reading another thread that claims that a cigarette can remedy a bee sting or mosquito sting? Does anyone have any info on this?

DataJunkie 10-10-09 10:04 PM

Search on google. There seems to be a bit of info stating that it helps reduce the swelling.

Yes, because where you put them now they degrade into fairy dust.

DataJunkie 10-10-09 10:17 PM

True. Recycling my tubes does nothing to help them degrade.

I said tires. Do you mean reuse, as I'd love to find out who figured out how to recycle tires.

I said tubes.
try reading my post.
Anyhow, I recycle my tires as well. Care to argue about something else?

I keep seeing powerbar and goo wrappers along the bike trail, those bicyclists are such litterers.

The city here will take my used bicycle tires and recycle them. They won't take automotive tires, but they do take bicycle tires.

Besides, automotive tires can be recycled - its just a little bit of a complex procedure, still much better then stockpiling them, or throwing them into landfills.

IIRC (from internet legend), official medical advice in 1940s/50s was to offer car crash victims a cigarette to help them calm down. So cigs can cure nervous shock, I'm sure they can cure minor stings, right? :D

I was thinking the same thing. So few people around here smoke anymore that trying to find a smoker on a bicycle would be like looking for a live monkey with an organ grinder - something you heard about from grandpa, but never actually see in real life.

Now we know that the smokers are in NYC and at least one of them rides a bicycle!

Ha ha ha... Cotton cigarette filters. That's rich. Guess again.

I think treespeed is the kid at school handing out oxycontin to his classmates telling them it is safe because it is medicine from a doctor.

I always thought filters were made from fibreglass but apparently I've always been wrong. As an earlier poster said, they're cellulose acetate that can take a while to break down: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cigarette#Cigarette_litter

Cigarette filters are made from cellulose acetate and are biodegradable[38][39], however depending on environmental conditions they can be resistant to degradation. Accordingly, the duration of the degradation process is cited as taking as little as 1 month to 3 years[38] to as long as 10–15 years.[39]

This variance in rate and resistance to biodegradation in many conditions is a factor in littering[40] and environmental damage.[41] It is estimated that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts become litter every year.[39] In the 2006 International Coastal Cleanup, cigarettes and cigarette butts constituted 24.7% of the total collected pieces of garbage, over twice as many as any other category.[42]

Cigarette butts contain the chemicals filtered from cigarettes and can leach into waterways and water supplies.[43]

No, my friends and I find the biggest group of schoolkids to smoke next to and talk about how 'cool' smoking is.

True, but seriously energy intensive process.

I see an older gentleman smoking his pipe while riding his bike on the River Road Bikepath (yes, he has a beard; no, he doesn't ride a recumbent. He's not wearing tweed, either.)

I ride at times while smoking. I usually enjoy a smoke after a nice long ride while drinking a beer, but then again I'm a smoker and a commuter and then some. I do enjoy the odd looks from people when i'm smoking and riding my bike or about to ride it, usually i figure their perception of a bicycle is that it is a toy or recreational equipment and not a tool/transportation.

rodar y rodar 10-18-09 07:18 AM

It`s tough to light a cigarette while riding because in order to ride no hands I have to be going fast enough for the wind to make lighting difficult. I just pull over or wait for a red light.

When I`m done with my smoke, the butt goes into my pocket until I pass a trash can- same thing that happens with all my cigarette butts. Since the last place I could smoke indoors went nonsmoking, the only place I ever use an ashtray is in my truck. For the guys who want to go neck punching, have at it. Smokers are already subject to enough harrasment without the litterbug aspect and the large numbers of our dwindling group who toss butts around aren`t helping anything.

Yes, cigarette smoke smells nasty to me and I`m a full scale smoker. It smells almost as bad as cigar smoke. Tough- a lot of things smell bad. Just don`t draft me (you`ll be late to work if you do, anyway).

For what it`s worth, I`ve tried nonsmoking for brief periods of time and it sucks. I don`t know what the rest of you see in it. Well, the prospect of saving five bucks a day sounds pretty good. Yeah, yeah- I know it`s bad for health. I don`t disagree, but nonsmoking just feels soooo bad I don`t want any part of it if I can help it.

Smoking is bad for you. Don't smoke.

Influenza is bad for you. Get vaccinated for seasonal and H1N1 this year.

trekker pete 10-18-09 07:42 AM

getting runned over by a cage is bad for you. better ditch the bike.

i abhor smoking, but not as much as i abhor the anti smoking nazis.

if lighting up gives you pleasure, god on you. just please don't throw your butts on the ground.

DataJunkie 10-18-09 08:07 AM

I abhor those that abhor the anti smokers.
