If Flex time isn't usual for your company, then your boss is reasonable. If others get it, then there is a problem.
I've worked for some companies that didn't care when I came in, and others who had strict policies forbidding arriving later than 7am. You have to go with the rules. Sometimes its more fun than others. |
Boss was WAY outta line with the "Why don't you drive like everybody else?" remark. None of his f'n business, first of all........
But it IS your obligation to be at work when they need you to be. I'm not AS fortunate as some who have posted here, but I got it pretty good; I've requested, and received, a stable work schedule (hours of the day/days of the week off) for about seven years now. |
Sounds like a boss on a power trip.

Boss Said: Why are your hours flexed. I Said: Because i ride public transportation and that's the way it works out been doing it for over a year. Boss Said: Why can't you drive like every one else? I Said: Have you seen the price of gas lately my commute is 25 miles one way would you like to pay for my gas and wear and tear on my car? There is a reason the agency subsidizes the buss pass and i only pay $20.00 a month. Boss Said: From now on you will work normal hours and no longer flex. I Said: Ok it's not worth arguing about now that i do the bike and light rail it will only put me 15mins later getting home. Some people just don't get it. Who authorized your flex schedule in the first place the boss who is now attempting to take it away from your or someone over him? If it was authorized by someone over your boss, does he have the authorization to "take it" away from you? Also what percentage of your fellow employees are also on a flex schedule? |
Time to find another job, IMO. You may find this conversation with your boss is only the beginning of more complaints, more restrictions.

Yes, some employers are really hung up on the car culture, dictating all sorts of things, and "suggesting" others. An engineer friend of mine in Houston had to sell his old but dependable pickup truck because the boss told him it didn't represent the right image when it was in the company parking lot. He lived too far to bike, and his situation prevented using public transportation.
Agreed, some people just don't get it. |

Your commute is not an excuse to not show up on time. |
Shoot the boss a gfy.

Around here PT isn't always on time. If your company is subsidizing your PT, you should have a few minutes of flex time (10-15 mins). 10-15 mins never killed anyone who wasn't working with the stock market or other time sensitive fields (air traffic controllers for instance).
And if they gave you flex time, but are taking it away b/c you use it, I'd say its time to leave. Next thing you know, they'll say you can't ride your bike to work or that you can't have blue pencils on the desk. When this starts happening, its time to leave. Been there, done that, got a better job. |
I kinda get paid some of my commuting costs, because I can take the company van home when I feel like it. Sometimes it's to do something for the company on the way home, or on the way in. Sometimes it's so I can get in early when we have the once a month slam from one of our customers. Sometimes it's because I just don't want to deal with the weather/bus/effort etc.
I think some of the cow-irkers don't like it sometimes, but the boss doesn't mind, I think he knows that if he objects, I'll turn up on time by my own transport, go home on time, and just do what I get paid for, and NOT all the extras they get out of me. |
How much does a company paid parking space cost downtown these days? Any parking space. In most real cities, you can buy a monthly bus card for the cost of parking ONE DAY in a garage. Just saying.... all sorts of things are "subsidized."
And nobody gripes about not having to take the bus (or bike) to work.

So the boss wants you to wake up earlier like everyone else?
You are lucky to have them subsidize your bus fare. No company I ever worked for would pay for commute cost. It's put up or shut up. Not saying it was a fun conversation but I guess it's the way things go these days. The way most companies feel is: no perks or special privileges, there are plenty of people to take your place if you go. Sucks that there is so little "support" for alternative commuting but it's understandable in some ways and your coworkers probably gripe about it. |
