Commute Racing

I hope this isn't old:

http://www.itsnotarace.org/scr-rules/

I have a FCN of 6, due to riding a road bike w/ hairy legs and non-cycling clothing, but with clipless pedals.

hairnet 10-26-09 06:33 PM

I dunno if I did this right

-roadie+hairy legs 4 (I commute on a conversion fixie, not a 'proper' bike. I also use my roadie)
-non cycling clothes +2
-messenger bag 0
-sometimes helmet/sometimes bike cap -1
-no power meter, but I have a computer(counts?) -1
-clipless -1

3

I should wear cycling clothes and be Core Elite

NoRacer 10-26-09 08:46 PM

FCN 0

Could have gone -1 if I left the backpack home.

> Roadies with shaved legs – like girls <
- Clothing - Team Kit (Team BBC): -1
- Baggage - Back Pack/Courier: 0
- Head Gear - Helmets/Nothing/Sunglasses: 0
- Accessories - Power meter: -1
- Pedals - Evidently Clipless/spds (cycling shoes): -1/0

Calculated FCN = 0

Doohickie 10-26-09 09:32 PM

I'm so non-competitive I don't even care a little bit.

JinbaIttai 10-26-09 09:51 PM

Can anyone translate this into English:

"Dropping / Pulling anyone higher in the Food Chain makes you stronger and more attractive to burds. Getting dropped / trying to keep up with anyone lower means your soul hires a kudos remover to lower your self worth."

I scored an 18.

Mr. Underbridge 10-26-09 09:57 PM

Fair enough. Game on!

I will say, they need some frame materials questions. I should get extra points for riding a bike that's half hi-ten. Also air pressure. When I come by running 30 psi on a 50lb bike, you should really feel bad about being passed.

Question is, what would be the "Fred" line? I'm a 12 on that scale. MTB with slicks, panniers, beard, non-cycling clothes. Clipless pedals though. Is that enough, or do I need the milk create and wrong-way stem?

EDIT: You got an 18?!? On what, a bike rickshaw?

orange leader 10-26-09 10:38 PM

I scored a 4 this week, but next week may be higher. come winter i'm putting on the face mask. And sometimes I tow the kids in the trailer...so eventually i might get up to a 7 or so.

No one around here to race during my commute (usually). Occasional pleasure bikers out on my way home, but they tend to be going the other way. Passed an older gentleman (late retired age) with a Surly Steam roller once. He apparently had just gotten it and was shouting with a bit of panic in his voice "I can't stop peddling ...."

CCrew 10-27-09 05:56 AM

I adhere to the JoeyBike scoring method personally.

+2 points for every cyclist you pass.
-10 Points for every cyclist that passes you.

FunkyStickman 10-27-09 06:23 AM

Funny site. When I start bike commuting, the city's bike commuting population will increase to 1.

MondoSam 10-27-09 07:06 AM

I'm a 5.

thenomad 10-27-09 07:18 AM

I'm FCN 10
MTB with slicks
Bag on the rack
Regular workout clothes and a tiny beard I suppose.

How much do you get for pulling off a wicked lead but not passing a regular roadie?

FunkyStickman 10-27-09 07:26 AM

Oh snap! I'm a FCN 11!!

PaulH 10-27-09 07:53 AM

-Shoppers +12
-non cycling clothes +2
-Panniers: (no panniers, but rain gear rolled on rear rack - counts?) +1
-Helmets/Nothing/Sunglasses: 0
-no accessories: 0
-Flats: +1

16 ( In the summer, I trailer my child to day camp, so 18)

"Fast Hybrid", non-cycling cloths, panniers, helmet, beard, toe clips
FCN: 12

FunkyStickman 10-27-09 08:06 AM

That does it, I need to grow a beard...

TheLifeOfBryan 10-27-09 08:40 AM

I'm conflicted on some of the questions. I wear baggy shorts over my UnderArmor, my trunk folds down into panniers when needed, and I also do all my grocery shopping on the same road bike. And what, no mentions of lights or fenders?

But that gives me (arguably) a base of 6. If only I encountered other commuters more than twice a month...

Agreed.

And I got a 5.

Vinci 10-27-09 09:12 AM

I scored a 2. I won't be making many points either, since I the only similar-level commuter in my area is the guy I commute WITH most of the time.

Rhodabike 10-27-09 09:32 AM

This only works for men. I shave my legs because I'd look gross in pantyhose otherwise, and obviously I can't grow a beard.
And why no category for hub gear bikes? Do they get lumped in with hybrids or with fixies? I call my Metropolis my "stealth" bike. While cruising down 10th ave. on the way to work one morning, I could hear a derailleur gear shifting behind me. So I shifted up. One block later, I could hear it again. Shifted up again. This went on until I got to a street where I needed to turn right, then I looked back and saw a bewildered young woman staring at me from the saddle of a touring/cross type bike about 30 feet back. Without the visual cues of a derailleur or the sound of a shift to go by, she had no idea I was also shifting up. :D

FunkyStickman 10-27-09 10:01 AM

How many points would I get for commuting on this? (has an 8-speed hub with drum brakes!)

Nobodyetal 10-27-09 10:05 AM

FCN 7 for my lycra-clad, back-packed, bearded, flat-pedaling, helmet-wearing, hairy-legged roadie self.

adamtki 10-27-09 10:06 AM

Got a 15 mainly cause of my electric bike. I don't get why an electric bike is a 14. I'd expect someone to feel pretty good passing an electric bicyclist. And then, if I do get passed, I should drop about 10 points! No excuse for being passed!

noisebeam 10-27-09 10:16 AM

FCN = 3

Never been passed on my commute in at least four years, even by folks trying to by breaking the SCR rules.

giaoster 10-27-09 10:23 AM

My is 12, passed someone on the road bike last night.
