B-17 rails
 

I got a B-17 to put on my Motobecane Fantom CX and the rails don't fit on the seatpost. They seem to be too narrow. Is this normal and do I need a seatpost with narrower "recievers" or is my saddle perhaps "broken"???

I have three bikes with B-17s on them. Never had to worry about a special seat-post to accommodate the rails on the saddle.

Tighten it down, it'll fit....

If you are leary of making it fit, bring it over to my house, and we'll get it on..... It's not unusual for Brooks saddle rails to be difficult to mount the first time.

I GOT IT!!!!! Thanks for the tip lol. I took it out for a ride, swear to god I will never buy another saddle, I don't even know its there.

Does anyone know if horse saddle conditioner will work instead of the brooks stuff which is uber expensive??

The Brooks stuff will work, and if you apply the amount they recommend, and at the suggested interval, that little tin will probably last you 20 years.

I only put enough Proofide on to protect against the occasional drops of rain that make it past my butt. I cover the saddle (one of mine came with the fancy Brooks cover; a plastic bag would be enough, too) if I expect it to get rained on. If you like how it feels now, don't do much of anything to it.

It usually takes at least a few rides to get to that feeling, congratulations on being ahead of the curve. I bought the proofide, and expect the tin to outlast me. Asking which conditioner people use on their Brooks saddle is guaranteed to generate a multitude of conflicting opinions, as well as a few folks who will mention then never use anything on theirs.

yeah a few ppl have said the proofide lasts forever, guess I'll be getting that lol

You can buy other leather conditioner than the Proofhide that Brooks sells. I use SnoSeal from REI that is actually supposed to be used for leather hiking shoes. Same thing and if proofhide will last 20 years then my little can of SnoSeal will last 40, haha.

I use Lexol from the auto parts store. Leather is leather, there is no magic involved.

I used a flux brush (I have extra) to paint the bottom of my B-17 with Proofhide. Got it on heavey enough that way, that I'll likely never have to do it again, along with excellent coverage.

The tin will likely last me many, many, many years.

With all the rain we have gotten this year, I still only do the top annually (in the spring-when it will stay "wet" for a few days.)
