My vote: not a necessity, but useful for maintaining optimum compatibility with locally sourced materials.:roflmao2:

Haha, I was being enthusiastic. Communication error on my end. It was quite a spectacle, watching the topic go from a totally sweet bottle opener on a bike to a serious faced microbrew chat. It stands to reason that people informed and fussy enough to hang out on a cycling forum would know a lot about a lot of different sorts of things. It was cool.

WAY TOO much extra weight!! And no portability. Sometimes a Real Beer Swilling Cyclist™ needs to open a bottle away from the bike.

Nothing but genuine, all natural, plastic opener and quick release holder for me.

ItsJustMe 10-30-09 05:46 AM

Anyone who went to college doesn't need a proper opener to open a beer. Hell, I don't even drink, and I've had friends searching around for an opener, and said "Gimme that" and opened with whatever was at hand. Edge of a countertop, spoon, pocketknife, lighter, ballpoint pen, whatever.

If I had a whole bike at hand, there are a lot of edges that would be fine for opening a bottle with.

Oh geez! You don't drink it from the can, just store it and ship it, much like a very very small keg (which is just a big ass can.) Drinking from bottles is just as bad as drinking from cans. Cans do a much better job of protecting the wonderful malty nectar than bottles do, as they completely block out light, which is the major cause of skunky beer.

If your beer in a bottle skunks, it means:
1) it tasted like crap to begin with (I'm lookin' at you, Heineken)
2) it didn't have enough hops, as hops is a natural anti-oxidxant (which is why the original IPAs had so much hops, to survive passage from England to India).
3) it was too old

If you're storing your beer in a place where it's exposed to sunlight, you already failed. See, your beer needs to be in a fridge or a cellar, not in your flowerbed.

Freaking savages.

Yes they do have good beer in cans: most of the Fuller's line is in cans now, Hobgobblin, Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Dales Pale Ale and Old Chub (as well as the rest of the Oskar Blues Line). Micro Canning is the hot new thing in microbrews.

add: ska Modus Hoperandi, Surly furious, bender and more, and locally in AZ: Four Peaks Kiltlifter

and as noted more the OB line, but especially: Ten Fidy and Gordon

Draft beer is definitely best, but I'd weigh 350lbs. if I had my own tap at home.

Manny's Pale Ale, and a big a$$ bacon burger. MMmmmmmm mmmmm.

I think I actally took an AP class in that...

Okay, throw this into the mix. From an environmental perspective, we should be drinking from steel cans.

valid point........

Does Great Falls have a Brew Pub? The last Great Falls beer that I remember was "Great Falls best" or similar name ..... I think that brewery closed down in the late 60's or very earlier 70's......

I had to survive on Olympia.....Montana where you drink beer bare handed at 20 below.

Grew up in Chinook.....140 miles NE of Gt Falls.

That bike was built by our good friends at Metrofiets. I want one of their bikes really bad, for grocery shopping and taking the boy for joy rides. One of these days...............

I really don't have anything to add here; but your reference, sir, to Obsidian Stout proves you're a true gentleman and scholar!

The bottles they used were non-returnables, why?

Well maybe not, but if you deserve the good beer you can crack it without a schmancy gizmo.

Who needs that schmancy fancy gizmo when you can buy a bottle opener and put it in your seat bag if your that desperate for a drink while riding. In fact my multi tool comes with one...though I've never use it. You know you can still get a DUI even on a bike, and it's the same points, jail time, lawyer fees, insurance rates skyrocketing and fines etc. as in a car. Then your going to put a bottle opener in plain sight for any cop to see just to give them an excuse to check you out.

Any other dumb ass people out there with bright ideas?

It's not bad. A decent choice for some flavor without the heaviness and strength, like with lunch. The best part about it is it is so readily available and is often the only drinkable choice among buds, millers, etc. Especially in airports.

My Rodriguez has a stainless steel one welded too the seat stay. Too classy for a bum like myself, but it comes in handy.

I bought a pair of these! I slipped them on, spied the cooler full of beer across the lawn, and began my stroll over to snag a cold one. I was a bit too focused on my upcoming frosty, cold libation, however. For within just a few feet of the object of my desire, I felt the dreaded squish under my most awesome new sandle that could only mean one thing.... yes.... a fresh steamy pile deposited by man's best friend. I never did get to try out those nifty sandles-bottle openers.

From an environmental perspective, we should have a standard size of glass beer and plastic soft drinks bottle than can be used 80 times before being recycled, as exists in Germany and Denmark iirc. Of course, that "standard size" would probably get described as "socialist size" here...
