Conti Ultrasports first impression - surprised how good
I recently had a series of mechanicals that shredded my Vittoria Rubino Pro (1yr) and a Conti GP4000 (<3 months). Both those tires had been going great, no complaints.

I resorted to a "cheaper" Conti Ultrasport tire that I got at my pricey LBS for $29 (I'm sure it's way cheaper online) since I ordered GP4000s from PBK and am waiting for them to be shipped.

Did a 70miler today, and so far, they worked great. I have to admit that I can't even tell the difference between this tire and the 2x more expensive Rubinos and GP4000s.

Can anyone comment on the durability of this tire? So far in my (extremely) limited use, I've been very satisfied, especially given the low cost of these tires.

My Ultrasports lasted about 1,500 miles but I'm a Clyde (220 lbs.). I replaced them with Ultra Gatorskins ($36 each w/ free shipping from and they seem to be a bit more robust but time will tell. My wife (who is considerably lighter than myself) has about 1,000 miles on her Ultrasports and they will probably go at least another 1,000 by the looks of them.

Ultrasports are the devil. I get about 2 flats a year with all the other tires I use, which includes Panaracer Tourgard Paselas, Conti Contacts, Conti Gatorskins, Conti 4 seasons, Michelin Krylions, and even Michelin P3Rs. I had two sets of Ultrasports. The first pair was decent. I got a flat every 2-3 weeks and they lasted may 1500 miles. The second pair was a disaster. I got about a flat a day until I installed tube liners. The second pair was so permeable that by after 500 miles, hundreds of bits of sand, gravel, and glass had worked their way completely through the tire and were stopped by the Mr. Tuffy liner. Finally, at 500 miles, the sidewall catastrophically ripped open. Its the only time in my life I had to call the wife for a ride home. Apparently quality control is nonexistent. **** ultrasports.

Also, the make the frequent flats worse, they were almost impossible to get on and off. I ruined several tire levers on these damn things.

Don't believe me? here
