Hey since you have a potential audience of 20 million, why not put out a bit of opinion regarding this anyway. How nice it was for instance to be stopped after having to avoid a car in the BL and how "nicely" you were treated.

Just an idea.

Never assume you must answer yes.

Ah, the "People's DEMOCRATIC Republic of". There was a post recently in a DC-area email list that the local jurisdictions are ramping up their seasonal ped/bike/anything-not-needing-registration-at-DMV safety-awareness campaigns (aka "don't become road kill 'cause it's really messy, sucks for you, and doesn't make the city/county/state $$ like the speeding and red light cameras do"). Ironically, Arlington is one of the better bike-aware and accommodating places around here (cyclists getting tickets at Alexandria stop signs being the other extreme).

That's funny. What good would reflective *anything* do when there wasn't a light pointed at you? You were approaching from the rear, correct?

Get yourself a couple of Magicshines. For under $200, you can have a light setup that will scorch retinas.

talking pictures in the US is not a crime if you are on public property - even if you are taking pictures with a telephoto lens into a home bedroom window. if your feet are on the public sidewalk you are technically law abiding ...

I've had good luck in Arlington, but some of my friends have gotten stopped in Alexandria:

BS tickets, especially for my one friend who is a safety nazi, and always comes almost a complete stop at stop signs and lights.

You've got to love how the people who are supposed to be enforcing the law often seem to have no clue what the law says. I've been pulled over for riding "too far to the left" on a narrow city street with parallel parking and nasty potholes. After a bunch of arguing the officer finally looked up the law and "decided to let me go with a warning".

A few days later I was taking photos of the street for my letter to the PD regarding that incident and I was harassed by the hospital rent-a-cops -- all while never setting foot on hospital property! I was on a public sidewalk the entire time.

My friend is a DA and she gets away with a lot. She does get pulled over by cops but never actually gets a ticket.

She said that they aren't supposed to flash their DA badges to get out of tickets but she has a special wallet for her badge and she just so happens to store her drivers license right next to her DA badge...

but yeah, OP here looks like he works for a newspaper.

I seriously doubt the Arlington cops know anything about such a specific facet of the law. At least Arlington has bike lanes and something reasonably approaching bicycle infrastructure. Falls Church City has this joke of a bike route running through tree rutted paths, not a single bike lane, and signage putting people on Lee Hwy, easily the least bike friendly place in the city limits.

This is Arlington:

If this is true, then you have an obligation as an American citizen to hold them accountable.

I personally would have told them: "Do you have a warrant? Because you really have no probable cause to stop me, YOU were parked illegally in the bike lane, you failed to maintain assured clear distance when you opened your car door, and further you do not have my permission to question me, to identify me, or to seach me. If you proceed you best be prepared to produce evidence of probable cause in court.

To do less is to have failed to deserve your 4th Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure. And if you are in a position to actually take action, then doubly so.

It’s sure not on a bike rack!
Actually I took another photo a couple minutes later showing off the new police bikes I got (and no they also don’t have lights. I’ve yet to figure out why some department put lights and sirens on bikes.)

I would love to see the police bike pics. My town runs trek 4300's. Small town small budget. Not knocking Trek but the 4300 is like riding a chevy or worse yet a ford. Go Dodge, ya its got a HEMI.

Please do provide the link and quote of such a law that applies when you are not driving a motor vehicle.

Until then I call BS.
