Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has chased off a group of girls attacking a woman, shouting at them that they were “oiks”.

Franny Armstrong, a film-maker and climate activist who admits that she voted for Mr Johnson’s opponent, Ken Livingstone, in the mayoral elections, was surrounded by the girls while walking home in North London.

“It was very frightening,” she said.

The girls, one armed with an iron bar, pushed her against a car.

“At that moment a man cycled past and I called for help,” Ms Armstrong said. The cyclist, who turned out to be the mayor, stopped.

“He said to the girls, ‘What do you think you are doing?’,” Ms Armstrong said. She added that he chased them down the street, calling them “oiks”.

He returned and insisted on walking her home.

“He was my knight on a shining bicycle,” she said.

Ms Armstrong directed the film Age of Stupid and is the founder of the 10:10 campaign, which aims to cut 10 per cent of carbon emissions in 2010 and has attracted support from leading firms and personalities.

She admitted that she did not agree with Mr Johnson’s politics, and had voted for Mr Livingstone, but added: “If you find yourself down a dark alleyway and in trouble I think Boris would be of more use than Ken.”

For us non-Brits, what is an "oik"?

helmut 11-04-09 07:17 AM

^A British slang term for members of the lower class. I believe in the US, we would call them "Midwesterners".

I'm a member of the lower class? If I could only pay taxes at the lower class tax rate I'd be a happy oik. :roflmao2:

helmut 11-04-09 07:30 AM

Ohio? Around here, that's the woolly north.

I'll take exception to your calling midwesterners lower class. Even though I have relocated to the Pacific Northwest from Ohio. If it weren't for the midwest part of this nation you wouldn't have any food on your talbe. Where do you think that food comes from? I'd bet the farmers and hard working folks in the midwest would probably feel the same. Or are you just a troll

Ohio is part of the Midwest. Same with Michigan. Midwest map attached:

I assumed you were joking about oik's being "midwesterners," and I sure hope that's the case. I don't think we have a slang term equivalent to oik in the US. Poor or lower class is about it.

So this is what is left of Brittish Knights? Chasing away girls atop a bicycle? How the mighty have fallen over the centuries! :)

DataJunkie 11-04-09 08:22 AM

Joke. Duh...

truman 11-04-09 08:41 AM

A mayor of a major metropolitan city that rides a bike to work is worthy of knighthood, IMO. Imagine how crazy such a pol would be painted if one were to do that here in the states.

imi 11-04-09 09:01 AM

I would much rather battle a Fire-Breathing-Dragon than a London-Girl-Oik... /Ex-Londoner ;)

...Or I was just being a bit sarcastic. I understand that my talbe overflows with midwestern corn and grain, filtered through the delicious muscles of cows and pigs. I live in Oklahoma, chill.

tjspiel 11-04-09 09:19 AM

We're snooty in Minnesota and refer to ourselves as being in the "upper" midwest which cancels out the "lower" in lower class.

Got to agree with that one...

Unusual crime, if I can interupt this thread and take it back to the OP, in that a gang of chicks were the offenders. I've been living for 49 years and read the paper daily, and I've never heard of that type of crime before. Girl on girl, gang of girls picking on another girl, yes, but never a gang of girls with a weapon assaulting an older woman. I wonder if they were drugged out or on some kind of dare. How old were the girls? Teens?

Chalk one up for the "Blonde Bombshell!!" Sic 'em Boris!!!

Probably China or Mexico.

labelcd6 11-04-09 02:46 PM

I'm as Midwestern as it comes. Instead of "lower class," I'd call us "low class." ;-)

Boris should have ridden the bike in the Top Gear Cross London Race instead of the Hamster.

I learned of Boris via Top Gear videos on You Tube. It's a shame that more politicians aren't as likeable Even if you despised every thing he did, you would still like him. If you never saw him on a bike, you would be surprised how avid a cyclist he is.

We have Adrian Fenty. That's enough.

Maybe it was a lead-in to a porn movie? This mayor ruined it!

It's called a joke: J - O - K - E. Now take a deep breath and say thanks for the food on your "talbe"...I know I do.;)

San Rensho 11-05-09 11:32 AM

I like the Brits, a CONSERVATIVE party member riding a bicycle! Can you imagine any "drill baby drill" Republican riding to work on a bike? That would be anti-American.
