My Homemade Panniers
I decided to make my own panniers to use while I figured out what I really, really want & need. These were made out of briefcases I got at some training course - I never use them. So far they are performing quite well. I keep all my work clothes in one and work-out clothes & lunch in the other. One stays in the bike locker area and the other comes up w/ me to the office.
The parts are from Jandd.

Thanks!
I got the hooks and cords online from Jandd.
Heavy J-Hook Stainless w/ Protector (ea)
Product ID: FWSA-HJH
Bungie Strap for Panniers Long
Product ID: WSA-BUN2
I used sides from a 3-ring binder to stiffen up the side of the bag near the wheels. They are tucked in the zipper area under the bungee.
The beige webbing was (were?) the handles from yet another old briefcase bag. Hand-sewn on.
Also, the hooks are attached to a stiff plastic piece that runs along the top of the bag underneath the zipper. These were cut from some leftover homebuilding materials by husband. Some basic screws and washers fasten the hooks, bungee, and plastic to the bag.
I do have to have these set all the way towards the back of the rack to avoid heel strike. So if you make them I wouldn't center the hooks on the bag. I'd offset them a bit so the bags can be attached towards the back of the rack.

Nice, I commute with my own DIY pannier, from a daypack. Do you have much heel strike with yours? They look rather wide, so just wondering...

I did have heel strike issues my first day with them. But I hook them as far back on the rack as I can and that has taken care of the issue. However, they do extend beyond the rack about 4 inches. This does block my back light a bit. To address this - I've got a blinkie hanging on the left bag and I've put reflective tape along the back side of each bag since the photos.

I love homemade panniers.
Here are some pics of a few I have done.
The first pics are of an Eddie Bauer bag that I use for laptop pannier. The Hook system is from Arkel and the stiffener is from an old worn out pannier. The Cat litter bucket uses the hooks from that same worn out pannier.

I really like to be seen at dusk or dark from all sides. I'm hoping these provide an added measure of safety. A new headlight is due to arrive in the mail today.
