Which is Worse
Ok, bad morning..
Which is worse 1) Being chased by a dog 2) Pedal strike 3) Pedal strike while being chased by mans best friend :( On the plus side, I never new my trusty old Cannondale m400 could go 34 mph (well 33.9). |

First, recalibrate your speedometer.
Second, it must be said, pedal strike means "You are doing it wrong!" Third, the dog earned an extra tasty doggie treat for making you feel like you were going real fast. Last but not least, the sum dog chase, pedal strike and discovering miscalibrated speedo does not rate as a bad morning. Ferrets are the greatest danger to cyclists. Sheldon Brown, RIP, wrote an entire series of columns about the dangers of encountering ferrets while cycling. These articles always appeared in the April issue of his cycling club newsletter. Sadly, this was in the days before the internet and no copies have survived. |

pedal strikes are the natural consequence of going fast around a corner. Last dog that chased me pulled up just as I swung my foot. Painful mistake on his part.

I don't think I've ever encountered a ferret, but squirrels and foxes are pretty bad too. |

I hit 34 mph on my commute at least twice every day I ride. Fortunately it's not from outrunning dogs. Got some big hills on my route. The worst situation is trying to outpace a dog on an uphill. I've climbed faster than I ever thought possible when being chased by dogs.

Getting chased by dogs is totally teh suxor. Thankfully it's a pretty rare thing for me. Only twice all year has a dog took off after me, and both times they gave up chase after a short while.
I haven't dealt with pedal strike since switching my wheel back to the singlespeed side. |
I failed utterly at Bikeforums humor attempt. My post, from beginning to end, was meant to be a joke. Sheldon RIP, never wrote about ferrets attacking cyclists, to my knowledge. Especially in the April newsletter of his cycling club in the preinternet era.
To see what inspires some of my failures, visit Google's pigeons page. At the bottom it tells you when it was originally posted. No good deed has or ever will go unpunished.:roflmao2: |
In the last two weeks the animals of Denver have gone CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had three dogs come at me on the MUP I've seen three coyotes cross the MUP I've seen one fox on the MUP- stayed there as I passed despite my yelling at it. I've had two very close calls with squirrels Thankfully I haven't been near any prairie dogs, their barking scares me when I don't expect them. |
what is pedal strike?

Which is worse
1) Being chased by a dog No big deal. I can outrun most, scare off the ones I can't. 2) Pedal strike Can't remember the last time I had one under normal riding conditions. 3) Pedal strike while being chased by mans best friend :( Had this happen once a few years ago, caused a nasty fall. I was so overcome with rage that I wasn't aware of my injuries for several minutes. I wanted to kill the dog but it ran off. Hobbled 2 miles home in the dark scraped and bloodied with torn clothes and a broken bike. Rode by the same spot later in the week during the day to see if I could find the house and dog but never did. Now I deliberately force myself to be calm around aggressive dogs so this does not happen again. |
I am for coasting in corners and striking dogs with my U-lock if they want to bite me.
|
I had a nasty pedal strike during my last triathlon. I was cranking for all I was worth and apparently went into the corner a lot faster than I'd realized. My pedal hit hard and it lifted my rear wheel off the ground. The force of the turn flung the rear end of my bike about a foot outward. Thankfully I kept the bike upright and the only casualties were a chunk of my pedal that got ground off and my tri suit which needed a thorough laundering. Of course, there had to be a race volunteer standing right there to witness my incompetence.
Thankfully I've yet to be chased by a dog on my commute. Had a few rabbits and skunks suddenly decide they want to cross directly in front of me and one deer that wanted to play chicken, but no dogs. |

Pedal strike is worse.
Mace makes the dog situation non-existent. |

I just shoot 'em with my water bottle. Stops that crap quick.

Can't comment on any of those since they never happened to me.
