If you're riding a bike to go somewhere that you would otherwise drive to, then that's a good basis to consider it commuting. If you're riding only for fun, and you start and end at the same place (i.e. your home), then it's not commuting.
Well since I froze my ass off Friday on a 14 mile round trip to the doctor, the optometrist, and lunch, I'm throwing that into the total. If I were a sane person I would have driven. But since I rode it, I'm calling it commute miles.

I am going to go ahead and try to do a full bike commute this year, i think 2000 miles might be possible with the 12 mile commute, 3120 if i go every day :)

I'll play! Thanks to our car being stolen my wife and I are starting the year car-free. Today was my first commute of the year b/c of vacation, so this is a modest start. I should get around 35-40 miles/week.

Did my first full commute since the 2nd today. I've decided to shop for some tires that handle snow better - my Marathon Winters just aren't cutting it.

my Marathon Winters just aren't cutting it.

I started off with Marathon Winter Snow studs and they just didn't do it for me. I switched to a pair of Nokian 294's and they made quite a difference. They're what you'd expect a winter tire to do.

The side of the tire says Schwalbe 100 spikes Snow Stud. Either way, I thought they were a waste of money. And wished I'd got the 294's to begin with. I ended up dumping them off on a friend.
