Reflective rims coming soon!

I know this is something more along the lines for the fixie crowd. But when I saw the latest issue of UrbanVelo I thought about commuters :)
Velocity is coming out with rims featuring reflective powercoat-

That's cool. My first reaction to that was to just get tires with reflective trim, but the fact is probably that there aren't nearly as many such tires available, and the rims are larger surfaces to reflect light and a more lasting part of the bike. I hope both reflective rims and trims on tires become popular options available in all sizes and types.

man I really wish I could get this added to my relatively new Dyad rims. wow does that light it up.

Interesting. I thought Velocity had already marketed this (in third quarter 2007). I had a friend who worked at a bike shop, and they had reflective rims in their catalog (along with their "wood grain" and sperm rims). It will be nice once they come out with this, I may have to pick up a pair of aeroheads.

I've put reflective tape on several pairs of rims. It works best if the tape stretches a bit.

this yellow tape didn't stretch as well as I would have liked, so there are some tears on the sidewall of the rim. But it nearly matches the paint, and it's very reflective.

there is a company on ebay selling stripe kits to put on rims. They have a lot for motorcycle, and are branching into bikes. They come in several colors too, though most of the thumbnails were neon green.

I've seen the reflective Dyad rims listed on web sites for a while and thought they were already available. A few points to consider. They cost considerably more than regular Dyads, about $99 vs $52. The reflective surface is a vinyl coating, and I'm not sure how this would be affected by caliper and canti brakes that use the rim surface for braking. I assume that the Elvs rims also weigh more than regular rims due to the coating but can't find any specs on that at Velocity web site.

3M make a clear reflective tape you can put anywhere you want.You might not want to put it on the braking surfaces.....

I applied 3M Scotchlite film to my commuter bike (as seen in my avatar photo) including the rims (disk brakes). Do not apply the film flush with the edge of the rim, it can cut the sidewall of the tire. A second set of tires later, with a 1/8th inch margin worked beautifully.

And Booger1 is right, DO NOT PUT IT ON THE BRAKING SURFACES
