A New (Old) Commuter Bike for Me
 

I just picked up this fine old bike this afternoon. It is a 1989 Cannondale SM2000 with a full Shimano Deore XT /XT II group: pedals, hubs, thumbshifters, brakes, brake pads, headset, short cage rear Derailleur, front derailleur, cranks, etc.). 18-inch Cannondale 3.0 frame with 28.5-inch standover height. Tange Prestige Unicrown fork, Araya rims, Salsa stem, Cannondale alloy bars, Nitto alloy post and Selle Italia Turbo seat.

It is in pretty good shape for a 21 year old mountain bike. Not perfect, but neither am I. The wheels are straight, it seems to run fine and it is nine pounds lighter than my current bike, so I am a happy camper. It also fits me a lot better than my current bike. I will spend some time tomorrow doing some clean-up on the bike and mounting a rear rack for the commute, then take it for a shakedown ride.

Nothing wrong with a good quality vintage, and the bike fitting you better would be worth it alone.

These kinds of bikes are great workhorses, enjoy it!

Nice find! I love middle to late 80s vintage mountain bikes. The c'dale looks like it's in great condition too. Have fun!

Get a Topeak Explorer rack. If that is anything like my M400 it fits perfect! On my M400 I wanted to get a compromise tire that was reasonably good on the road and unpaved single track. I went with the Specialized Crossroads on the rear and a Specialized Hemisphere on the front. They roll very smooth on the pavement with a small contact patch but still have some bite off road. I put 1200+ miles on them and they still look new.

I was adjusting the brakes and derailleur cables on the bike today and discovered that the threaded portion of both shifters with the barrel nut adjuster is broken. It is broken right where it enters the shifter body. The barrel nut and the threaded part spins with it so it will not tighten the cable. The threaded part is plastic and 21 years old so I guess it is understandable.

I have a set of Suntour Mountain shifters on my old bike that I would like to use as a replacement for the Deore XT shifters. The Suntours are all metal and have operated flawlessly for the past 15+ years on my old bike. Is it possible to replace the Deore shifters with the Suntour shifters without a lot of hassle? They are both 21 speeds, by the way.
