+1. I have these pedals and they work well.

Shimano or Shamano depending on your view point, actually has a great pedal designed for road bikes but with recessed cleats for MTB shoes called the PD-A520. Shimano shoe that a poster pictured above, model SH-MT60, is a great shoe because it allows you to clip in yet it has the ability to walk around in comfort. If you want a lighter shoe with a roadie look and price is no object and still be able to walk in them the Specialized has a shoe model BG Pro Carbon MTB is also a very good shoe.

Here's a link to the pedals.

I got the Shimano 530 because I thought they'd present less pedal scraping in corners, they do but the problem is that what makes them present a narrower platform also makes them less comfortable when using regular shoes as there's no support on the outside of the ball of the foot. Ironically the chromed spring rusts up a lot more than the lower cost 324. I've got these pedals on some bikes that are outside near salt water and I noticed the release changing, looked at the spring and the rust had exploded through it, which didn't happen on the unchromed spring for the WellGo and Shimano 324 pedals. So if you ride often without cleated shoes get the wider 324 or Wellgo copy and don't pedal through corners. If you commute in salty/mucky conditions with the 530 put some thick oil on the spring to protect it from rust.

I've used the Shimano M324s for the last 4 years on my commuter bikes. I think they are the perfect pedal for what you're asking.
