I've never understood people's love affairs with these. They're very expensive and heavy to boot. Made with thick gauge 4130 I believe. I guess if you're looking for a new steel bike then this is an option, however, there are lots of much better and cheaper steel frames out there.
I own a bunch of bikes and if I had to pick one I had to keep, the LHT would be it. It's a joy to ride. I use to be one of those fellows thinking "what's up with those people and those Surlys". Then I tried one and never looked back. She's the only thing I ride. to and from work. To and from school and more. People talking down on this bike are the people that have never ridden one. My next bike will be a CC. |
The LHT is a tank. Its comfortable, it handles well, and it is very utilitarian. But make no mistake about it....it is a tank. It gets its name Long Haul TRUCKER for a reason and I am reminded of this everytime I ride mine. It really is a tractor among bikes. I ride my LHT when conditions are poor (snow or bad road), and/or if I need to carry a load and when riding rail-trails with the kids at an average pace of 6mph. Otherwise, I'm on a different bike. If agility and speed factor into your concept of fun then the LHT is not for you.
Now, I have 6 other bikes, so my LHT is really only ridden when absolutely necessary....and I do love it for its functionality. But if I had to ride the same bike everyday, and only occasionally burdened with a heavy load, I'd choose something a little more in-between, like a cross-check...somewhat sporty, but still reasonably utilitarian. |
thanks again all. so i get it now. trucker really does equal buick. cross check equals jeep. basically i love solid, so for me both sound fun. and i dig my cantis too (pauls, lovely) so both frames/bikes sit ahead of the pacer for me. i still feel the (hypothetical) trucker love and appreciate getting a better sense of it (in the absence of real bikes to test ride where i live). the only minor quibble i have about the trucker is how i might feel being more upright and a dead feeling. hmm. on the dead feeling, a cool compromise might be the trucker with the 26inch wheels (on what'll prolly be a 58cm). that would give it some more pep, off the mark at least... and also, as per my on-one, i kinda dig a high bb, so CC wins there...but seems with either i can't go wrong... and will be happy either way... oh, maybe i am leaning CC's way...tomorrow i will change my mind!
