what age group do you fall in?
i am going to start commuting to work some this spring. I am 35 and just started riding a little over a year ago. i live 9 miles from work and thought i would start commuting instead of driving my bike to the bike path for exercise in the afternoons.
i was curious what age groups commute more.

Honestly, I rode every day "no matter what" for 3 years, but this year I said screw that. It's just not fun to ride 11 miles each way in 8 inches of unplowed snow. Plus it puts me in the lane on 50 MPH roads with moderate to heavy traffic in rush hour on roads with one lane in each direction. These roads have decent shoulders (about 2 feet wide) but they're unrideable when there's lots of snow.
I ride regardless of temperature or wind, but when there's lots of snow, I just drive. I don't have to prove anything to anyone, and if I'm just making myself miserable, then to heck with it.
I'd say that as we approach spring, riding on nice days is a good start.
Also waiting until spring means you probably won't have to buy lighting to be visible on the roads. You'll want it eventually anyway, but it'd be nice not to have to spend that money right away.

I've heard that before, but the funny thing is, I was a republican when young, and I'm pretty solidly democrat as I now approach 50 and have 5x the income as when I was a republican.

Well, wait till the snow melts at least. I agree with you that a winter storm is not the best time to start commuting.

You have to start by enjoying it. If it in't fun you're not going to do it. I started the summer I hired myself for a nonmanagement position, rode until it was too dark. Then I got lights. Then until they salted the roads (ride C&V bikes). Then a bomber for the winter as it evolved to year round commuting.

I'm pretty encouraged by the fact that 51-70 seems to be the biggest group so far... means I got a lott of riding ahead of me

BTW, I grew up in Franklin and rode a lot in Nashville during the 80s when I was in school at Belmont.

I've to tell you, I found out this year that weather in the 30s w/o snow is pretty darn good for bike commuting. I'm sure it's not much colder than that in TN. You can ride in your work clothes and put a light jacket/wind breaker on. Take it easy and you won't sweat too much.

Pretty much. Winter commuting is about 45% will, 40% preparation, and 15% ability. With the right clothes and tires cold and snow isn't so bad. It's the headwinds that suck.

I can fall anytime, I don't need to be in a particular age group.
But I'm 54.
