No you wouldn't. Get an Old Man Mountain lowrider fork. Mounts through the axle and to your brake posts.

Barrettscv - I wasn't aware of that rack. It actually looks like a good option. You might want to check it out.

Very sweet. You got me thinking

DeepVs. I almost went with some originally, but went Velocity Fusions instead. Now, I have 650Bs.

I have a question for barettscv or whomever..

How are you attaching your racks on the rear with the disc brake? What is the largest bag you guys are putting on these Soma's?

woodway 02-23-10 10:58 PM

I am using a Topeak Explorer Disc compatible rack. It's got standoffs built in which allos the arms to clear the brake assembly.

For bag/pannier, I use a Topeak trunk bag with foldout panniers. Topeak has many sizes/options. The bags slide/clip right onto the rack.

I have been waiting for the Soma 2010 DC to come out. I heard they were might be a "coffee" color. Anyone hear anything??

Love the Mavic Speedcitys in the original post. It was a bomb proof year round commuter wheelset for me on my last bike. Great build!

Extremely nice builds all! I'll have to post up some shots of mine when I get a chance to grab a few, just finished her last year and I love it! :D

Here's the only pic I have of it so far, it's a teaser shot

An Old Man Mountain Sherpa can be used on the rear. I don't have a Soma, but I have a disc equipped cross bike commuter that has a Sherpa disc.

Awesome rack.

can you get that with a flat bar? Soma DC really looks good. Sorry, was a dumb question as I just looked at the site.

For us newbies, if one decides to build such a cool bike, where do you get the parts? The LBS is so expensive, seems cheaper to just buy an existing bike.
But I do really like the way the bike looks.

Banzai 03-14-10 11:40 AM

You can buy full component groups at GVH bikes for a good price.

A variety of other online retailers have good deals.

4 years ago or so, Nashbar was a great place to buy components, until they became basically just a clothing outfitter.

Barrettscv 03-14-10 03:33 PM

I purchased a NOS Felt Cyclocross bike and cannibalized it all its parts. I sold the frameset and recovered 70% of the price of the complete bike.

Consider buying one of these and doing the same: http://www.bikesdirect.com/products/windsor/cyclo.htm

Soma just posted the color changes for 2010. The addition of the "rising sun" head badge on a creamy Ivory paint job will look great. Add some leather wrap and a brooks saddle!!

Here's a better pic of my DC, still adjusting the fit on it...most comfortable bike I've ever owned! :D

I would love to build a flat bar version of this bike, but have no idea where to really start. Guess I will resort to LBS....:o(

Do you have any experience working on bikes? If you do, should be able to throw one of these together rather quickly. If not, I'm sure your LBS will throw one together for ya! Either way, it turns out to be a great bike!

I bought most of my stuff on sale after the biking season was over. I think I paid $150 for my Ultegra Shifters, the crankset (Ultegra 6603) was only about $125...there are some good deals to be had out there if you're patient. Most expensive parts on the bike were the wheels, had to have them overbuilt for my fat ass!

I am still debating whether if I want to put the Velo Orange smooth chrome fenders on. Living in the Pacific Northwest fenders are a MUST but I have an old commuter for wet weather. Keeping it clean and simple throwback.

Old thread but heres mine.

Slx hubs with 26 inch dt swiss rims
Deore lx hydros
SRAM X9 RD and shiifters
Shimano 105 FD
26-38-48 chain rings - Deore crankset
Specialized MTB carbon saddle

Garmin Etrex vista for navigation duties.

Comes in at 13.3kg for the whole package and goes like a rocket. Got to say I like it better with 26 than 29 though. Bit less pedal clearance but it climbs better.
