Your not carrying enough "stuff" if your worried about the weight of your wrench. Heck, my lunch is 3 pounds.

It's 100 grams, 5.5 inches long, with no sharp edges, and fits in my little seat bag. http://lh3.ggpht.com/_wc7ef8CMbxA/Sf.../DSCF01441.JPG http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=138948 |
I don't know about its weight, but you can find these pretty easily in Europe, or on ebay if you search for "dumbell spanner:"
http://www.sparesworld.co.uk/acatalog/CPT5036039.jpg It's not very heavy, fits the hand well (plenty of torque for axle nuts) and in addition to your 15 mm wrench you also have a 16 mm, 14mm, 13mm, 12 mm, 11mm, 10mm, 9mm, 8mm, 7mm, and 6 mm wrench all in one. http://www.sparesworld.co.uk/acatalog/CPT5036039.jpg |

Gee, and it's only $103.58!

Seems to me the Park Tool and the Campy tool have a certain cache that goes beyond weight.

I just carry a regular socket wrench with 15 mm socket that you'd find in any hardware store. I guess there's a weight penalty, but those lightweight wrenches all look like a PITA to use. If they're too short, it's harder to get enough leverage. If they're just stamped out of a sheet of metal, then it's going to hurt your hand to apply a good amount of force. For me, the extra weight is worth the convenience.

I have a Kobalt (Lowe's housebrand?) stubby combo wrench. I got a whole set for $20 and I keep the 15mm in my saddlebag.

That's a good deal. I've presently got three of 'em that I got cheaper on ebay, but if I didn't, I'd go for $8.

Another vote for the Campagnolo peanut butter wrench. Word has it that Campy discontinued production, but they are available from time to time on eBay. A little pricy, though at about $30. It's well worth the style points.

I had one of these for a while (from my local hardware store, not Rivendell), and eventually the 15mm end of it snapped off. Perhaps there are better-made versions out there, though.

Been doing ok with this set up so far. I moved the wrench over so you can
read that I'm packing six inches of drop forged heavy duty steel. |

I think the best balance between lightness and toughness would be to make this wrench, then drill and file the polished "Craftsman" bar part out of it. That might take what, about 1/4 - 1/3 of the weight out of it? Tinkering with stuff like this never gets boring for me in case you guys can't tell :D That shouldn't weaken it too much, looks like there's enough meat between the Craftsman bar and the edge to keep it strong. |
light (86g), strong, expensive ($33 at the link below though S&S says it should only be around $20:

I like my Surly Jethro Tule.
http://surlybikes.com/stuff/jethro_tule/ Not particularly cheap ($20-24) or lightweight, but it is nice and compact while still giving a real nice hand hold for good force due to that spoon-like handle. |
Haven't carried this around since the early 80's
