Commuting through the madness

About to go pedaling around downtown Vancouver. Should be interesting :o

Just scream "Woohoo!" the whole time and you'll be fine.

Best advice ever :D

Yes, congrats to our friends up north.

Commodus 02-28-10 08:39 PM

Wow I made it out. I'd say it was insane, but the word just doesn't capture it.

It was like thousands of screaming, ******** frat boys invaded the downtown core.

Although I was rooting for Team USA, it's hard not to feel happy for our friends to the north when you see what this victory means to them. Congratulations and way to go, Canada!!! We'll get you next time.

Aside from hockey and a few other events, you already got us this time! Congratulations down south too, on the record 37 medals. Kind of stymied our whole "Own the podium" plans :)

Down in New Orleans a couple of weeks ago the Saints won the Superbowl DURING Mardi Gras! So I can relate.

Congrats on both Hockey Teams. I always like to see the home team win gold at home. Unless it's the Russians! I guess you folks will have a national holiday for the next 4 years eh?

Went for a ride round my neighbourhood after the game and I've never seen so many street hockey games in progress, or so many drunk drivers!

Nice to be honked at jovially rather than malevolently for a change. Goodwill abounding!

Edit: well I suppose it might still have been malevolent... bah.

I had to read down a few posts to figure out what the OP was talking about. Not too surprising though, the Olympics were on for 3 or 4 days before I knew about it.

I think I might go download the BBC coverage of the whole thing and watch it over the next year or so. That's about how much I can take at once.

I can understand. The most dangerous place I ever commuted was coming home from the UC Santa Barbara library on a Saturday night. Del Playa in Isla Vista was wall to wall drunks, and many of them on bicycles. A street full of drunk bicyclists is a scary place.

csisfun 03-02-10 09:05 AM

Hmm, is Vancouver a bicycling friendly city? With any lucky, I'll be in the UBC next year.:thumb:, gotta live a carfree life for a while, for sure.

closetbiker 03-02-10 09:15 AM

very bicycle friendly.

Already was, and improved over the last two weeks as more and more people got out of their cars and realized there were alternatives. The last two weeks of bike commuting have been the best in a long time. Another reason I miss the games :)

closetbiker 03-02-10 11:46 AM

one of the (bike) things I'll miss from the games were all those Dutch riding their dutch bikes in central Richmond where many have said that no one could or should ride a bike.

The Dutch showed them you can when they did.

Yep, the commutes were better than ever during the games. I really noticed the reduction in car traffic. Let's hope a few of the drivers who rode transit, or their bikes, stick with it.

I didn't visit Richmond but it must have been cool to see the Dutch bikes in action.
